We went to a local auction yesterday where it was an extremely rare situation where nothing was of value to us. Didn’t see a single thing to bid on. The family was selling their house so they put decades of their items up for sale. I assume they kept the best stuff, but it was weird that an auctioneer would even be willing to spend his day selling what looked like garbage: stained couches, VHS tapes, kids toys, broken yard tools, boxes of dusty trinkets, stained kitchen containers, threadbare sheets.
Ironically, the place was packed and mainly just an opportunity for locals to get together and talk. A couple was selling breakfast at a plastic table, and everyone was saying goodbye to the homeowners who were moving away to be near grandkids. In rural areas, auctions are often more of a social event than a commercial event.
