Steve – I saw your advise last week on what to do with the JC Penney stereo system that has been sitting in my basement for a few years. I think I’ll try to replace the belts on the tape and 8 track players. If that doesn’t fix them, then I’ll just sell as-is.
From your end of video with the kitty cat, I just wanted to say that bananas and coffee go together quite surprisingly well!
This week, I sold two junk drawer listings to two different buyers. These are listings where I take mostly random stuff that I don’t want to sell separately and put them together in one big listing. Both had been listed for at least a year. There must have been an article somewhere about junk drawer listings since they both sold suddenly. The first sold with an offer of $36.75 and the second for $25.
If I do this again, I think I will avoid breakable items. I did not like packing those.
Last year I went to an auction where a few bidders threw out stuff they didn’t want in a big dumpster in the middle of the room. They must have been collectors and not resellers. I pulled out a few things including this vintage chemistry set. These go for very good money, but this one has missing items and some damage. Sold for $45.
I’m in a Facebook group called Freecycling where people list stuff that they don’t want, and other members can ask for the items. There is a strict no resell rule, which I absolutely follow. However, there is no rule saying that you can’t pick up an item and then sell the item it replaces! A lady offered several Wilton Armatale platters that matched some of the ones we received at our wedding years ago. So, I sold the mismatched one that my mom had picked up at a flea market for $1. It sold for $27.
I bought this sculpture for about $17 at a live auction last year. I was interested in it, but hadn’t taken a good look. Both myself and another bidder raised hands at the same time, and the auctioneer took his bid at $10 and then mine at $15 (plus premium). I really didn’t want it at that bid, but I went through with it. Then, I found that it was damaged at the base. Still, it sold (after about a year) for $84. Not a bad mistake to make.
So far most of my sales are from things I already had. Either items from when I was a kid, or things I got when a relative passed or items left over from my time owning a comic shop.

a K&E Steelspring Bow pencil. Looks like a drafting tool. Found this in a box of things I got a few years ago when my dad passed. Including the link because it’s interesting.
Sold a small Lego creator set that was a 2014 Holiday exclusive if you made a purchase directly from Lego.
Sold a carded action figure from the Robotech TV series. I bought this new from a clearance bin back in the late 80’s . Over the past year I’ve sold about 15 of these and have 3 left.
Sold a Dell Lone Ranger comic book. This was in the several boxes of comics that I kept when I sold my store in 2001. Still working my way through these as it’s take a while to list each one due to needing to be really descriptive with the listing.
@Steve, I love that tabletop 8-track. Sorry I am late to the party, but I was camping last week (actually staying in 10th Mountain Division hut in the mountains with friends).
Two weeks ago I went to a garage/estate sale run by a woman who decided she had had enough. It was one of those make a pile and make an offer situations. I went through the house and pulled out a few small things and offered her $5 which she accepted. Then she said that the books were all free. There were around 30 boxes of books in the driveway and I grabbed 4 or five boxes full. Right away, I had a few of sales from that.
It has been a great summer for finding stuff at garage sales. I think many people have taken the opportunity of being home to get rid of stuff. Now I have some huge piles to work on this winter. Best regards to all.
Dropping in to say I just love those moments when you are sourcing and can’t decide on something so you look it up and then solds come up over $100. And you’re like “whoa!” and then grab it and run to pay.
