Vintage photos from an event in Japan
Last year, I bought an box of ephemera at auction. One item is a small, cardboard portfolio with black & white 6″x4″ photos of what appears to be an event in Japan. I thought that I had things pretty well figured out, but then I took a closer look at the writing on the front “Adm. & Mrs. Sullivan”. Adm is usually an acronym for Admiral. (Note that no one is wearing a uniform in the photos).
I tried looking up an Admiral Sullivan, and found two Vice Admirals. Both graduated college in the early to mid 70’s, but I think that these photos are older.
One thought is that Japanese sometimes call people by titles that they don’t really have. A friend of mine told me that she would be called “doctor” when she met with a Japanese vendor.
Any help is appreciated. First is the link to the photos. I didn’t include closeups of all of them, but I can add if requested. I also included photos of a souvenir fan that came in the same lot, but I don’t know if it is associated with these photos or not.
Here is Vice Admiral Paul Sullivan, who does kind of look like one of the guys in the closeup photo:

Here is the other Admiral William Sullivan, who doesn’t look like either of them:

Other information I figured out:
Using my cell phone, I used Google Translate on words inside the portfolio. One word is Tokyo and the word before the number is Osaki.
The number listed looks like an older six digit phone number. In the US, this would date the photos from the 50’s or earlier. However, I don’t really know when Japan went to longer phone numbers, so perhaps they are not that old.

Now that we’re completely closed on 2017, I’m calculating all my sales/COGS/etc. In a separate post in a few minutes, I’ll summarize my 2017 including best & worst buys.

Steve – I love Midge’s little castle. Looks like it was made out of an old tv?
I haven’t posted for a while since I had a knee replacement in September (ouch!) and because sales have generally not been good for us. But here’s what sold recently:
Cassette carrying case, bought for $1, sold for 30:

In spite of these seemingly good profits when I look at what ebay and paypal take out and it’s a little depressing. Wah!

Thanks, Steve, always fun and unique stuff from you. Love the tie! Ok, I admit it, I actually laugh at the 3 Stooges, Laurel & Hardy, and all that other kind of humor.
I would be so afraid to ship guitars. My boyfriend is into guitars, both acoustic and electric, knows a lot about them, especially old ones. We’ve bought and sold a few, but all sold locally.
That cat is hysterical! The dogs look totally happy to let her entertain them. I hate to ask where is the other cat. Glad you give a good home to these critters though.
Staying busy with shipping and going through my own jewelry for selling … Problem is I know what I paid for those things and I’m too attached, so not pricing them for quick sale.
I tore apart my college scrapbook, sold the scrapbook itself, and sold all my old Rose Bowl and other sports tickets, finally sold this USC Trojan Marching Band record and pamphlets for $31.99: https://www.ebay.com/itm/112648279702 I think I’ll part with my USC yearbooks next, probably a few people in there that are famous now.
Here’s some other sales:

Reply To: Selling High End Jewelry, Watches
Recently, ebay started a service that authenticates high end purses. You send the item to ebay, they authenticate it, and then they send it to the customer. They take a 20% cut, but it would protect you against scammers. Here is the annoucement:
https://community.ebay.com/t5/Announcements/eBay-Launches-Authentication-Service-for-Luxury-Handbags/ba-p/27601197
The notice states that other items will be added in the future. I would think that high end jewelry, including watches, would be one an obvious category for expansion.
Someone asked me about selling some vintage gold jewelry on ebay. He had taken the jewelry to a “we buy gold” service, and they offered around $1200. So, you know that the jewelry is worth much more. I told him that I would be nervous about selling something so valuable, but I would be much more confident if ebay had an authentication service for gold jewelry. I’m on the lookout for when the program expands.

Many of the pictures available are of ornaments standing up or hanging up. If you could provide a picture of the ornament standing or hanging up, it would help with the search.
This looks very close in nature.

Interesting convo as I’m finishing up the podcast on % of your store that is high dollar. You’re absolutely right, you can’t sell something for $1000 if you don’t have something listed for $1000.
I just did a quick analysis of my store (currently 898 items):
– 559 listings under $30 (62%)
– 276 listings $30-$100 (31%)
– 62 listings over $100 (7%)
And then an analysis of my sales over the past 90 days (257 sales):
– 159 sales under $30 (62%)
– 84 sales $30-$100 (33%)
– 14 sales over $100 (5%)
Pretty astounding how close they mirror each other. So, presumably, if I get more $100+ inventory, I would also sell more $100+ items. But can a store survive with only that inventory? I would think not because the volume would be lower.

Another good week, definitely above average for me. I do love this time of year as the non-registered buyers start coming through more often, they rarely try to haggle on price and just Buy It Now. As I’ve noted over the past few weeks the percentages of sales that are coming through Promoted Listings is incredibly high now. My hypothesis is that the surge of shoppers that aren’t familiar with eBay may be navigating/clicking on the promoted links, while seasoned eBayers are looking for the best price/nearest location of items.
Not too much listing/sourcing activity this week during the holiday. My wife & I hosted my parents, her parents, and her sister. It was a nice Thanksgiving and then on Friday we took my parents to the World Trade Center grounds – the new park and pools first and then up to the top of One World Trade – as they hadn’t been since it was still a pile of rubble 10 years ago. Incredible views at dusk!
