almasty, ebay actually tried something like that one Holiday season. I think I may have been the only person who thought it was a good idea (in order to be competitive) It was a complete flop from the seller side. It was voluntary, and was called Extended Holiday Returns. The way it worked was: Seller enters program. Beginning Nov 1, his returns are changed (by ebay) to be valid through Jan 31st. Sellers screamed they would never do 90 day returns, but of course, if you listed an item on Jan 1, this was effectively a 30 day return. The only time it was actually 90 days was for Nov 1st listings.
What I liked about it (besides the obvious fact that buyers buying Xmas gifts early (early meaning November) were basically assured that if they gave a gift on Xmas Day, the gift could be returned after Xmas. With my usual 30 day return policy, they’d have to wait till nearly December to buy—so it helped us compete during the all important Holiday season. The other thing I liked: I didn’t actually have to change my return policy. It would automatically revert to my 30 day policy when the period was over. The last few years, I’ve thought about going to 60 days for the Holidays at least because buyers want that assurance that gifts can be returned. Amazon isn’t the only business that has some version of this. To me, it’s just smart marketing. Yes, you could end up with an increase in returns, but it could also prompt an increase in sales.
Wouldn’t be surprised if we something similar in the NEXT seller release….

My gut tells me there was supposed to be more to this, but they are behind schedule and threw this together…which means the third and final one, which I think is going to be June or July, could be a real doozy to send us into the 4th Q.
Sonia, yes, they had explained in the summer release that the partial could be no more than a 50% deduction from the refund amount. My understanding is, if the seller wants to refund less than 50%, or even zero, the seller is back to contacting ebay and hoping ebay agrees.
The stuff about the rules for the “exception categories” comes from the Community Boards, an ebay rep provided it. I assume it will be part of the promised webinar, but who knows? LOL
I’ve been free return shipping for a few years, had no problems with it, but it’s hard to say whether that will change or not…I’m just hoping to keep my return rate low…

This Seller Release….I’ve never seen one so lacking in detail. Usually, if you dig into the FAQs you can find the answers to most questions, but it’s like who ever was in charge of putting this out just said “Ah, screw it…let’s get to eBay Open and party!”
Vintage, OK, but better read the new seller update…ebay has caught on to that tactic, and now has a 14 day price rule…I won’t go into detail, just read through the Seller Release that came out today and you’ll see what I mean.

The Collectibles and Art vertical includes the following ebay categories:
Antiques
Art
Coins & Paper Money
Collectibles
Collectible Comics
Entertainment Memorabilia
Pottery & Glass
Sports Memorabilia, Fan Shop & Sports Cards
StampsBut notice, not clothing (unless you have it under Sports memorabilia or maybe some Collectible subcategory)
Also, note that while these exception categories can issue partials, the rules are dramatically different:
In these categories, the seller will be able to provide a partial refund to the buyer for items returned damaged, but the deduction amounts available will be either 10% or 20%. In addition, you will only be able to offer a partial refund for remorse returns.

I think you are right, the partial refund at seller’s discretion is a perk for those offering free return shipping. (There are some category exceptions, but I don’t think slothing is one).
I’m guessing if you don’t offer free returns, and you aren’t in the exceptions, you will continue to handle it as before, which means basically throwing yourself on ebay’s mercy, or at least the CS rep’s mercy.
Let’s face it, ebay wants sellers to offer free returns….you aren’t required to, but …

Well, as you know, I don’t really see ebay going in any radically different direction right now and I don’t have any particular fears about the direction it is going, so I guess a simple quote seemed sufficient to me. But I can see where some might prefer to go read it on their own. We all have different approaches to this stuff, that’s what makes life interesting.

But if you quote ebay directly, it is the stuff coming directly from ebay. Why not just indicate your source and quote? Would be easier for everyone I think.
I’m guessing this is the highlight, but again, I don’t think there’s anything really new here:
Sellers can create rules to automate replacements, returns, and refunds under certain circumstances. For all new sellers, in listings where returns are accepted, eBay will set a default rule that automates the return process. Sellers may remove or customize their return preferences in their account settings within My eBay. Where settings have been set to automatically accept requests for returns or replacements, an eBay-generated return shipping label will be provided to your buyer. You agree to comply with our returns policy.
When an item is returned, to refund the buyer, you (as seller) authorize eBay to request that PayPal remove the refund amount (in same or other currency) from your PayPal account, place the amount on your invoice, and/or charge your payment method on file.
The cost of return shipping for an item that is not as described is the seller’s responsibility.
You (as seller) authorize eBay to place the return shipping label cost on your invoice, subject to your automatic payment method on file when:
An eBay-generated return shipping label is used, and the seller is responsible for its cost;
Returns have been automated;
You fail to send your buyer a return shipping label and, instead, an eBay-generated shipping label is used; and/or
A transaction is cancelled, and to refund the buyer, you (as seller) authorize eBay to request that PayPal remove the refund amount (in same or other currency) from your PayPal account.
