Someone needs to introduce them to the wonders of shrink wrap rollers…
Very good analogy.

I think it depends in part on how we define higher end—a minimum selling price of $50? $100? $1000?
Around here, at least where I usually source, I’m not very likely to find $1000 items without spending up a good bit. But $50 and $100 items? I can find those without spending up too much…not every sourcing trip, but the items are out there. For me, the real key is to always be learning….so that I recognize the stuff when I see it. Fortunately for me, that’s one of the things I really enjoy, learning new stuff. I think being a generalist helps—if I were sourcing only clothing, for example, it would be much harder, because there’s a lot of competition in that category around here. Maybe if I lived somewhere else, or sourced more online, I’d consider specializing more. There are advantages to that, but for me taking a broad approach seems to be best.
Thoughts and prayers are with you!
I sold some postcards for someone once on eBay. Postcards. easy to ship, pretty easy to list. Consignor never happy with prices (this was back in the auction days) Sold a few, gave the rest back to the consignor and told myself: never again.
I can’t imagine doing a Dickens Village like you’ve been doing.
I’m a dinosaur, and a latecomer to smartphones. (The better half doesn’t have one, period. I have an old ZenFone2 I picked up a yard sale for $10 a couple summers ago). But what amazes me is that ebay was so out in front with the ebay app (ebay had an app before Apple had an App Store)….and yet I hear a LOT of complaints about ebay’s app (especially for listing). To their credit, they foresaw the rise of Mobile before many of their competitors. But they let that advantage slip away, IMO.
I think part of the problem may be that it might be easier to start from scratch than to try to transform a long established site like eBay. An example: I’ve seen recent criticism of one of the changes ebay made to the listing app—apparently it now allows only GTC listings, no 30 day or shorter durations. Predictably, sellers are complaining that one size doesn’t fit all, they need duration choices etc. But if you are creating a new site, you can just say duration is GTC. Period. No one is going to complain because there is not and never has been a choice on the new site. People will just accept it.
So ebay has to deal with pushback that sites like mercari can often avoid.
Still, ebay is a big, rich company, and it’s just hard to understand why they can’t move more quickly to compete.
ChristineK, I’m not sure, I got the impression ebay didn’t think liability was probably an issue for ebay or the seller. And I agree with your take, as a small seller , especially of used items (which have no “set” price to begin with), it’s not something I’m worried about…..I don’t see a State Attorney General dropping everything to chase down scavenger sellers.
Today Griff acknowledged that the reason they imposed the 14 day rule in the first place was due to concern about potential legal liability in the wake of recent court actions. The reason they rolled it back is because apparently the Legal Dept decided liability would not attach to ebay….I don’t know, maybe there have been some more court decisions or something….in any event, my guess is we’re good for the rest of the year, but if another court case comes along to worry the Legal Dept, we’ll see a repeat…

Well, they just did make it official…although they sure are leaving wiggle room to go back to the 14 day rule after the holidays!:

Yep…complete mystery to me why ebay continues, year after year, despite all the complaints, to NOT formally announce stuff like this.
10/09/2018 at 10:38 am in reply to: So this is weird…Markdown Manager is working on items I listed yesterday #49853It strikes me as a rather abrupt about-face for ebay, and I’d love to know the real reason they did this. We were told one reason for the rule was the law regarding sales, but as far as I know, no laws have suddenly changed.
Having established a 14 day pattern, it also seems they could reverse course but create an option in the Markdown Manager flow, so that if I WANT to limit my sales items to items 14 days or older, I could easily do so.
And of course, it would seem that a change like this is significant enough that it should be on the official Announcements page, not tucked away as a response in a Seller Board thread.
My guess: since the 14 day rule went into effect, ebay has seen a serious decline in revenue from MM sales.
By the way, I started a Markdown Manager sale earlier this evening (Oct 8th), and even new listings I put up today were automatically part of the sale.
Thanks for the suggestion. Not sure how the better half will respond to that suggestion…..maybe if we sell a storage unit’s worth of inventory before next year’s trip.LOL
oh, and packing! Had some decent sales while we were gone!
It’s Oct 1st—want to wish everyone a GREAT 4th Quarter! Don’t forget to enjoy the Holidays too!
