The main Spring Seller Release is scheduled for late April. So, hey, we all have that too look forward to.
I’m with Jay….for me, this is a positive release, I have no problems with any of it, and like some of it. The GTC issue is the one that has people riled up. I switched to GTC last year, before the Holidays and haven’t looked back. Sellers who haven’t been using GTC….well, some of them seem to be convinced it will be impossible for them to sell on eBay with GTC.
Apparently, it’s not the actual Spring Seller Update. That’s scheduled for April. It’s a “Limited Preview” of the Seller Update. eBay posted to the Selling Board that they will post there when the non-working link becomes active.
For a self described Tech Company, it’s really amazing how many times they can’t get even the simplest things right. Amazing, and a little scary.
Yes. More often than I like to admit.
Amatino, that’s correct. But the OPs question was about: where else BESIDES the search page results do PLs show up? When PL began, there were just a very few placements other than the Search results page…they’ve been adding more over time. WHile I have no proof, I strongly suspect that a lot of my PL sales are the result of a buyer seeing one of my items on a page OTHER than the search results page. Most of my stuff, if the buyer has a fairly narrow search, will show up on the first page of search results without PL. I use PL because I want the OTHER placements.
Jay, I see it as basic business. ebay—ecommerce generally—is highly competitive. Most sellers look for things that give them a competitive edge. Most such things either cost money or time. For example, I can gain a competitive edge by reading this Board and listening to the podcast…doesn’t cost me anything but time. I can gain an edge by finding a really inexpensive source for shipping supplies. I can gain an edge by sometimes paying up at auctions and thrifts to buy stuff that will increase my ASP….spending more to make more And I can gain an edge by paying for PLs….same thing, spending more to make more.
Each seller has to decide for himself whether spending more time or money is worth it for his business.
I don’t worry about ebay making more money from me if I make sales through PL. I only worry about whether the cost to me is worth it or not. Same as I worry about whether paying $40 at an auction for something is going to be worth it when the item sells. I don’t worry that the auctioneer is going to make more money from me…that’s his job. ebay’s job is to make money from sellers and buyers.
The results of the only real test of PL that I’ve seen:
eBay Promoted Listings have a Significant Effect on Sales– Experimental Results
“Promoted Listings may appear throughout our network, including desktop and mobile search results, and product pages. Placement and ranking are influenced by a variety of factors, including ad rate, listing quality, relevancy, and competing listings.”
You get placement on the search results pages, as well as a number of other places on eBay. eBay has expanded the locations over time, I’m not sure there’s a complete, up to date list available. My gut feeling: for my type of stuff, the search results page placement is not as important as the other places.
02/20/2019 at 7:57 pm in reply to: ebay Promoted Listings Now Available to Non Store Owners too #57406ebay’s been very clear that Promoted Listings and Managed Payments are going to be two big revenue streams for eBay, so yes, definitely, ebay will continue to push and tweak PLs.

I can see the potential in RA, but like many others here, I have a hard time convincing myself to do RA, especially since I’m in an area where I can usually find non RA stuff without too much trouble. (Admittedly, getting a little harder as more people get involved with this sort of thing, but as Jay likes to point out, we live in a country with So.Much.Stuff…)
I’m not entirely risk averse, but one thing that bothers me is what Julie B just said: “If you ain’t first, you’re last.” I don’t like the idea of getting stuck with a bunch of RA stuff that is declining in value….at least some of my scavenged stuff has actually increased in value as it sits, waiting to be listed LOL
Also, I worry the B&Ms will increasingly crack down on RA buying in their stores. I walk into an antique mall, no one is going to complain if I empty an entire shelf….they’ll be too busy high fiving each other instead.
If I didn’t have so much scavenged stuff already, and good sourcing, I’d probably do more with RA. But for now, it’s some thing I do only if I stumble across something that looks like a really easy and profitable flip. Which isn’t often.
I bought a bunch of these at WalMart in an after Christmas sale….but been too busy to try using them. Hopefully I’ll get some time soon….
02/03/2019 at 5:18 pm in reply to: Coupon Code for discount on ebay for buyers – made by seller #56331Last year at ebay Open I was told by an eBay person that they were working on coded coupons to replace the codeless coupons they have now. I pestered ebay for months after that, asking just when we were going to get the coded coupons. They eventually shut me up by basically saying not gonna be 2018. Now, here’s the thing….something like that MIGHT be coming this year. I’m hoping to see it in the next Seller Update (if not before).
In the meantime, you can create a codeless coupon, but that’s not really what you are looking for.
Haven’t watched the video yet, but agree about ebay and Mobile….ebay was a pioneer in ecommerce apps, but whatever advantage that may have given then, they seem to have squandered it. And , so far at least, I haven’t heard much from eBay to suggest they recognize the need to really improve the app.
01/29/2019 at 9:24 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 396: Guaranteed Delivery? How is that working? #56062Haven’t had a chance to listen to the podcast yet, but on GD: Sellers are nearly immune from any negative consequences from late GD delivery, and I think eBay has now rolled it out pretty much to all listings that qualify. As far as I know Seller Hub provides us with no data on GD. No way yo know how many items sell with it and how many don’t. No real way to know whether it has increased my sales velocity or not. I figured for our type of stuff it might be more important during the Holidays, but I think the better half said she noticed That some of our listings, which has been qualifying for 3 day GD before the Holidays, turned into 4 day during the Holiday Season. If so, that makes some sense, ebay probably factoring in potential delays, but also reduces its value for us. So not sure how big a difference it made.
I suspect the program over all is working OK for eBay generally. eBay may have internal data that shows increased sales velocity due to GD. I also suspect the amount they actually have to pay out for late delivery is very small.
its impact on my business: It might be hurting or helping. No way to know.
