I came to ebay in the very early days, and one thing I realized was that , despite what many old timers will tell you, the attraction for most people was not “it’s fun!” or “I love old stuff”…it was the perception that ebay was EASY MONEY. ebay is no longer the only game in town, but that’s still the attraction for a LOT of people who follow the YouTube gurus….whether it’s ebay, Poshmark, Amazon, whatever…..I tend to agree with Jay: a lot of people are attracted to this, but only a small percentage are really going to put the work into it.
I watched the video clip from WSJ….it says Ralli Roots is a half million dollar a year business. Ryan said ebay and wholesaling used to be most of that, but now it’s wholesaling and their educational stuff that is the larger proportion….ebay is still important, but obviously they’ve shifted gears somewhat. And of course, a half million a year is presumably gross.
This is one reason I think ebay is making a mistake by pushing new stuff so hard. They should be pushing, at least in part, something like: “eBay. We were selling hand me downs before hand me downs were cool”
Required soon? Depends on how you define “Soon”. Sometime next year, everyone will be folded into it….but not before June or July. Per the Paypal-eBay Split agreement, ebay could only manage up to 5% of GMV before this June (or July, I forget which). That increased to 10% through June/July of next year. After that, the limits are gone and it will be mandatory, whether done as a gradual rollout or a big one time thing, I don’t know. I’d guess more of a rollout. So we’ve probably got through at least middle of next year before we won’t have any choice.

“Drop shipping, where you fulfill orders directly from a wholesale supplier, is allowed on eBay. Remember though, if you use drop shipping, you’re still responsible for the safe delivery of the item within the time frame you stated in your listing, and the buyer’s overall satisfaction with their purchase.
“However, listing an item on eBay and then purchasing the item from another retailer or marketplace that ships directly to your customer is not allowed on eBay. In such cases, we may remove your listings from search, display them lower in search results, or remove them completely from the site. We may also limit, restrict or suspend your ability to buy, sell, or use site features on eBay, and you could lose any special status and/or discounts associated with your account.”
Winchester, I was going to suggest they pay full price and refund the difference, but wasn’t sure buyers would like that. Glad it worked out.
HistoryNerd,
Congratulations! Now, if you want a new death pile, let me know….I could send you a storage unit full of stuff for a modest sum…keep you busy a long time! LOL
As far as I know, yes, they can counter offer on a Seller Initiated Offer. Not sure if they can do it multiple times, or if they only get one bite at the apple.
OK, so a couple buyers who you did NOT send offers to, and who did not use Make An Offer, sent you offers contained within ebay messages, so not “official” offers….
I think if they had been offers based on your listings “Make An Offer”, you could have just accepted them (I assume your listings don’t have Make An Offer turned on?)
So it looks like you can’t do anything until the clock runs down on the Seller Initiated Offers (which I believe run for 48 hours). I had never thought about it, but if that’s true, it might be good to have Make An Offer on the listings we send with Seller Initiated Offers.
I’m a little unclear on what you are saying. Are these “counter offers” coming from the buyers you sent offers to? Or are they just offers from regular buyers?
I think if they were actually sent as formal counter offers to your Seller Initiated Offer, you just accept them as you usually would.
So two things: are the buyers buyers you sent offers to, or other buyers?
Are they sending you formal counter offers, or are they just sending you an ebay message that contains an offer?
Yep, Michael Parks (Then Came Bronson) has something of a cult following I think….Congratulations!
Yes, 6 is Linda Evans….got my Dallas and Dynasty mixed up LOL
2 Tom Snyder
3. Richard Chamberlin
5. Michael Parks
6. Morgan Fairchild?Simon, Yes, PayPal is one of the available methods now. I don’t use MPs, but that was rolled out a little while ago. Not sure about Global Shipping, I don’t think they have that yet.
Vintage Treasures, While I think different buyers have different reasons for not paying on accepted offers, I do think in SOME cases it is because they’ve made offers to multiple sellers, and choose the one they prefer from those who accept the offer (so shipping price, return policy etc might come into play when they make the choice)
I saw somewhere, can’t vouch for this though, that one of the things in the works is: with Managed Payments, if a buyer accepts a sellers offer, it will trigger immediate payment. Just have to wait and see on that.
Yes, this was announced at eBay Open today. I believe they also said they will be adding other permissions later.
