Once we saw one of these shoe soles fall apart, we can now spot them anywhere.
It has certain feel to them.I saw a pair of Rocky boots yesterday the the thrift store that had these soles just starting to fall crumble. I’m surprised there hasn’t been some class action lawsuit against the manufacturer of that rubber material.
That’s quite a find. Going after hours is smart.
I doubt that any business will give you permission to dumpster dive. It’s a safety/legal issue. Plus it just goes against their whole existence to give stuff away for free!
Your photos look awesome. I agree that good photos are the key. We also have cut down on long descriptions since the photos should tell the story. The text we include usually just state what any labels say.
How large of items can you fit in that box? It looks like it’s about big enough for a pair of shoes. Anything larger?
I can only hope that the sellers who give stuff away will quickly drop out. Not sure how it can be worth their time. I’ve been seeing a lot of 50% sales. Insane.
I hope your optimism is justified. The last time we had a President let his Vice president do all the deal making, things didn’t go well. We’ll wait and see. As we said, we’re ready for anything!
Just regular soap and water. Wool is an amazing natural fiber which cleans up well. This is why it’s a great fabric to scavenge.
I respect your view of healthcare since you are a nurse and your husband is a doctor. I hope you will be as tough with the Conservative leaders that will soon be completely in control and who, as of yet, have not put forth a comprehensive fix other than abandoning the ACA.
Let’s remember that before the ACA, lack of healthcare and expensive insurance was already huge problem. The ACA didn’t cause the problem but was a good faith effort to fix it.
So voters have voted. Let’s judge the results.
We have a complete show shine kit so we can clean and polish any kind of shoe. These are the one kind of item that we don’t leave “as is”. Cleaner shoes sell better.
We will oil some wood objects if they look better. We will polish some silver if the patina isn’t sought after.
Wool coats are easy to spot clean with soap and water. Or we’ll throw it in the wash on gentle and let hang dry.
I bet someone like Steve has a whole work bench for when he works on his vintage stereo equipment.
We have a couple places where we’re going to hit up tomorrow since we’ll be in a nearby town. I assume thrift shops won;t be crazy like the retail stores.
You could even encourage people to donate anonymously to everyone else so there isn’t a weird “who donates more”. Then they could write a note to you personally.
Yeah, the left shoe has a bunch of creases in the toe bend. Still nice shoes.
Just my pinion: the more DIY, the more free everyone feels to inject their own creativity on your celebration. It feels less scripted and awkward…and more spontaneous. It could be pure celebration.
And is it tacky to just set up a donation page instead of gifts? “We want to buy this piece of land/house. Help us make a down payment!”. (Maybe too tacky)
Yeah, I’m not really into weddings where I have to pay a lot of money to attend (clothes, hotels, travel)…and then see that the bride/groom shelled out a ton of money as well. You’re all trying to have a good time but everyone’s silently thinking “I spent a lot of money on this!”
Welcome Ashley. Yep, your store just needs you to out in time. When you get to it, I’m sure it’ll be great.
We personally don;t spend much time repairing or fixing items UNLESS they are high dollar items (over $300). There’s simply too much stuff to scavenge to fool around fixing a $30 item. We either re-donate or sell it as-is.
If Ryanne and I were to ever get married, we’d totally follow your path. Spend the money on the party and festivities, not all the weird wedding rituals that seem inauthentic.
Doing it really DIY is just doing it in a park for free. Then just rent out the back of a restaurant as you suggested.
Not to advertise to you, but we’re promoting our Farmhouse as a place for DIY weddings: http://luraymodern.com/weddings-at-the-farmhouse
The idea is that people rent the entire weekend so they have a place to stay. Then just DIY the event, including food. Why not just do a pot luck or a big BBQ? Let guests camp out for cheap. No idea if there’s a market for this style of wedding. -
