“Andrea by Sadek” lists a pair of identical plates as “Andrea by Sadek, Japanese Decorative Hummingbird Plates, Identical Pair, Blue Pink Red Hibiscus Flowers, No chips, cracks or crazing, ” 14 USD for the pair. Got that via an image search for “Japan plate with hummingbird” so it’s difficult to give a usable link to the page.
One of the local scavenger/hoarders here used a bicycle with a sheet of plywood screwed to the luggage rack. Saw him once with a three-seater upholstered settee balanced crossways on it.
When I’ve shifted large objects by bicycle I perched the object on the pedal, e.g. door or cupboard, and leant the bike over towards me. Bit of a pain. I shifted a 12 foot by 16 foot Persian carpet on a bicycle by rolling it up and putting it lengthways along the saddle and handlebars.
Found a 1972 handbook for the PDP-11/20 last week, in a box of 1980s computer books. Has a line drawing inside with measurements, in case you didn’t know what it looks like (spoiler- it looks like a box).
I think the plate’s Japanese, with Chinese-style characters, but I’m not sure. Maybe the kind of plate for finger foods rather than knife-and-fork eating!
Funny- I saw the patch and immediately thought “Afrika Korps”! (Head boy at my old school was a big fan of the Nazis; he had a shirt embroiled with the AK badge, though his mum drew the line at embroidering the swastika on the trunk) US Palm sells accessories for AK47s then…
I suppose you’ve googled “Palm tree army badge”? I can imagine someone designing this badge, and someone else saying “You know what this looks like? And it’s the same tan colour…” 🙂
I’ve ‘piggy-backed’ on a couple of other sellers’ auctions with success; pick a healthy-looking auction for the same kind of item, wait till the end and then list as a BIN with a similar price. Or lower if you’re feeling mean 🙂
I haven’t either! Seems to be a thriving design scene in Burkina Faso- Nassara Design who have a line of masks made from resin.
Hi Amatino, that’s interesting- I based my ideas on a website devoted to masks that I was reading about three years ago (can’t find it now). So I was thinking, if you can’t wear it, don’t buy it as it’s not a proper mask, based on the website owner’s opinions on people’s masks.
Bloke at the car boot on Sunday had a box full of African statuettes with projections at the bottom as if they were carved to stand in a boat, for £5. If he (and they) are still there this Sunday I’ll check out the carving marks. Not that I’d buy them- I’ve got enough long tail stuff to stretch from here to the Ouagadougou choo-choo.
Hi Daisy, first one (the ‘cat’) is Indonesian or Bali probably- definitely not African- and is probably a tourist piece if there’s no eyeholes. Second one’s an African tourist piece, and the third looks like it comes from Southern Africa and is a tourist piece.
Yes, I have had experience selling these. I have this theory- there’s so much of this tourist stuff around here in the UK that the genuine valuable ones get overlooked. Just a theory so far 🙂
Bruno Claessen’s blog contains plenty of info on genuine masks. Warning- his latest entry contains pictures of prehistoric bones in a cave.
In the UK defibrillators are usually found inside redundant old-style red telephone boxes. The boxes are available here at a price!
Think it may be to hold a newspaper. It’s for something flat, and letters or other pieces of paper wouldn’t be visible, whereas a newspaper would be peeking out the top. I’ve got a weird bamboo frame for holding a newspaper while you read it. In them olden days newspapers were broad sheets (broadsheets!) so you could hold one up in a frame like a fan.
Well, you’ve got the bottle but in the photos it looks like there’s glaze on top of those strips- I would have expected tape to have burnt off in the firing. There’s a potter called Huw Powell Roberts who signs his pots HPR but handwritten, not stamped.
Probably a lamp base- the hole would be for the plastic grip to hold the wires. Top would have a plastic fitment for the bulb socket. The addition of metal strips to the glaze is pretty unusual.
