Hi!
Another Georgian here. I’m in Cumming (yep) but it’s easier to just say Atlanta. I’m seeing a few other Atliens here. We should have meetups or something. When we’re not up to our eyeballs in stuff to list, that is. 🙂ETA: We just started to harvest and make tea on our property from the Yaupon holly. If any Trash Elves want to try it, I’ll make a special coupon code for 50% off. It’s called Yaupon Tea and it’s the only plant native to north America that produces caffeine. We have a small grove that we’ve been tending for years and it’s finally large enough to share the spoils. Feels like a green tea in the sense that it doesn’t give you jitters. Tastes like a black tea.
It’s a lot of work but it’s super fun to make. I have special stickers on the way but you may just get a hand-written bag if I don’t get them in time!

What were you and Ryanne doing in Atlanta!?! Next time ya’ll are around we’d love to make you dinner or or meet you wherever you are and buy you a beer. You’re responsible for most of my scavenging success. You’re 100% responsible for me sticking with it and not getting down about slow times.
I’d love if Cumming would get rid of the chicken plants out and make it tourist friendly but I don’t see that happening. I’d run for city council but I hate managing other people. And I’m too grumpy. We moved here because it was the only place we could find an “old” house (1930s farmhouse) for (well) under 200k. Our house was what most would consider a tear down at the time but we slowly (and still are 13 years later) re did it. We also bought almost an exact replica down the road and use it for a rental house. I’d love to AirBnB it but there isn’t anything good about the area. I thought about ripping out all the plumbing and electricity and making it a “real” 1930s experience. Outhouse and everything. I think the wifi issue would turn (me) off, though. Some reasonable part of me talked me out of it.
It was a favorite of the Native people before (and probably after) European settlers. They call it the “Black Drink”. To be terribly honest, I have *no* idea why we haven’t become more reliant on it. It grows exceptionally well in the south. This is pure speculation with absolutely *NO* anthropological training on my part, however, perhaps the large influx of Europeans brought their own tea with them and had no use for it. Again, probably nonsense…
I am a caffeine addict and because we don’t grow *any* caffeinated things on the mainland, (and Hawaiian Blue Mountain coffee is so limited) I’m thrilled to know that if trade routes were suddenly disrupted that my neighbors and I can still have caffeine! I mean, there’s always red bull… ick. Also, great for bartering! I will admit that we had a bit of a head start as my in laws have a tree farm in north GA (they don’t grow these) but my husband is pretty arborially knowledgeable because of this.
I can totally send out a couple tea bags to anyone who wants (for free) until I can’t prune anymore for the year. The bags cost me next to nothing and I’ll mail it in an envelope with brewing instructions. If you have your own tea ball I can send a bit more as I don’t have to use (or make) the little bags. The 50% discount would be for the “big” bag that makes about 20-30 cups. Just pm me and I’ll harvest and roast. Takes about 4 days in all.
Maybe you’ll like it so much you’ll plant your own, which I highly recommend!
