I see those chalkware heads often enough and you’re right, they are quite lifelike. Probably 95% of them don’t sell for a whole lot…20-40 bucks maybe. But there are a few that have more interest and value. I sold one by Bossons of a Santa Claus head for $80. I probably could have gotten more if I listed it closer to Christmas.

The key on those Bossons heads is condition. They are quite fragile, so every little nick matters. I’ve sold mint condition heads in box with tags for $200+, but also have sold broken ones for repair for as little as $10. I was fortunate enough to buy an entire lot of 75ish from a collector a few years ago and did quite well on it.

I wouldn’t have bought them if there was only one or two, but since it was 16 and I got a hell of a deal (everything I purchased that day averaged out to $8.18 per piece, and $150 of that was for a Carl Schlieper 2 piece stag knife set). I have a Maid Marian from Robin Hood that appears to be rare going by eBay prices. The rest were in the $20-$40 range.

My biggest sale of the week was a piece of vintage test equipment. It is a simple mechanical variable resistor. The arm rotates to change the value of the resistance between 1 and 11 ohms. I borrowed my brother-in-law’s multi-meter to show that it works. I bought it in an online auction lot where the whole lot went for $3.30. This is the second item I sold from the lot. It sold for $36:

I didn’t have very many sales this week, but I’ll throw one more in. I bought a lot of small but high end kitchen items at a live auction about two weeks ago. The lot cost about $29, but there were so many items that each came to about $1. This is a set of cheese markers from Williams-Sonoma that sold for $16:

Hi everybody!

It’s been a bit of a nightmare here. In the Days of Our Lives department, I have been stealth looking at another place to live. Long story, but my partner and I might be really on the rocks this time.

I like to think I’m an 80s Virginia Slims advertisement with a sprinkle of slightly less slutty Cosmopolitan, but I’m like a deer in head lights. My sister, who won the cast iron skillet throwing competition for three years straight at the county fair has more worldly experience in this department than me.

I swear I will have a stroke if I can’t take my cat bffs.

Oh sure, I have travelled a lot, but rarely without my twin like co dependent partner. Yes, I have taken all those goofy couples quizzes (my answers change for the same quiz too many times to count): made the therapist’s cute outfit waterlogged with tears: and stood staring into space thinking “What the heck am I thinking!!”

So now I am back in cold feet land. The decision is not as simple as it ought to be. I think of my aunt who got divorced twice when both her husbands cheated on her, forgot to renew her health insurance policy, found out she had lung cancer, and lost it all, including her life.

Will I have that kind of bad luck if I strike out alone into the big world? It’s been 20 years since I could do whatever the hell I wanted. Maybe a comfortable routine and dimming love with a good person is better than freedom.

In the meantime, I did manage to put together a video. A lot of this is about intentionally buying damaged items and selling them. Although things like mold are iffy, you can conserve them, but they must be quarantined as mold can and will spread. There are ways to remove most of it. I rarely do that, but I once sold an 1800s book about the Great Lakes which was heavily water damaged in under a half hour for $395.00. I went to a forum to ask about pricing, checked back and Boom it was Sold. Same thing with a true First of Carrie. It was destroyed, spine broken, some pages included but free from the binding. Library issue so it had markings. Somebody wrote profanity inside the cover etc. I eventually put it up for $75 and it was gone in 4 minutes to a buyer in the U.K. In my defense, this was my green horn era.

However I am still living and learning, and hopefully evolving.

Tattoo Flash Sheet, sold for $50 paid $6.40. This is the 3rd one I sold from the lot I purchased a while ago, the other two sold at auction for $40 each.

7 Reed & Barton Royal Bamboo Forks sold for $42, cost .10 each

A mixed lot of copper pipe fittings. Sold for $50, paid $9 for the lot. These are often overlooked at estate and garage sales.

Partial box of greeting cards, sold for $16.95, paid $1.

A vintage Cottage Cheese Wax Container, sold for $34, cost about $1.00

I had this for over a year, so I took a best offer of $30, cost 4.00

And my best sale of May, I accepted a best offer of $300, paid $10 for it.

I purchased a lot of 27 of them for $210. They were all priced differently. It was the third day of the estate sale, so everything was 50% off, but I asked for an additional discount if I bought all that were left and got them for 60% off. Funny thing is, I saw somebody else that had one on eBay that sold for $40 that was from the same tattoo parlor, since they are in the same area, they probably bought it at the same sale, I’m glad they only bought one and left the rest for me.

You all know it… I LOVE FLAGS!!! I’ve had this for about 8 months, bought at an estate sale of a big time military collector for $25. Sold for $165 best offer.

Tiffany Paloma Picasso Silk Scarf
I know Jay doesn’t like scarves. I don’t mind them so much because of the wide profit margin. Can usually pick them up for $3 or less and easily sell for $20+. This one I bought 2 weeks ago and just sold for $32.50 best offer.

Ever Ready Single Edge Safety Razor
Always also buy safety razors when the price is right (less than $5). Usually they sell quickly with the proper research. This has been listed for years. Finally jumped on the first offer I ever got on it at $15.

(5) Vintage Estate Tobacco Pipe Lot
Part of the big estate lot of pipes I bought 2 weeks ago. Listed the good ones individually (and have sold 3 so far for a total of $180) and then made 2 different lots of the lower dollar pieces. This sold for $80 best offer.

May 28 – June 3

Great video, Steve. I’ve been learning a lot about audio equipment from you. And as soon as you showed that Grass Valley editor, I immediately knew what it was. I recently listed some service manuals for those and they sold quite quickly.

I’ve made a few sales last week. Here are the more interesting ones.

So the city I live in had it’s heyday in the 1920s and 30s and has a lot of rich history. One thing that it’s known for was the Wheeling Marsh cigar factory. The original building still stands to this day, and there is a lot of memorabilia floating around this area. I see these cigar boxes often but usually in pretty beat up shape. This one was no exception. It had wear and ink pen doodling, but it was still in ok shape. I paid a couple bucks for this at an auction and it sold for $15.

I see these Millers Falls drills a lot, but when this came up at an auction I knew it was special. It was in really good shape for it’s age. I barely had to even clean it up. A few drops of oil and some wood polish and it was ready to list. I priced it at $60 and took a best offer of $50. I only paid $5.00 for it.

I mentioned on here the other day that I acquired a small pallet full of garage service manuals and took a few days of my vacation time last week to photograph and list them all. Well these were the first set to sell, and it only took about an hour after listing. The whole pallet cost me $173. I got out of that 135 books or sets of books so the individual price I paid was $1.26 each. This pair sold for $40. So far I’ve sold 5 listings from that lot for a total of $97. At this rate, I should be out of the red in this deal within a week or two and will have so much more to sell.

Finally, here is the highest priced item that sold last week. They’re a complete set of unopened vintage bed sheets made by Springmaid. I got this in a lot with another set that I already sold for even higher. I paid a bit higher than usual for them though. Individually, I paid $12.50 for each set. But I’m glad I did. It took about 6 or 7 months, but this set sold for $60.

I had a nice little sale on a nice little Singer … I couldn’t believe it was still there on the last day of an estate sale. They had it for $30, last day $15, so I asked if they’d take $10 and they did (surprise on my face). I paid to print the little manual from an online source for $4.99, as I couldn’t find one to print for free or to buy for less than $40 on ebay. Nice little profit, sold for $99.

Loved the video- Those Jeanie Rub massagers are a lifesaver- my chiropractor uses a similar one, newer model of course, but I was lucky enough to find an original one for $3 at the thrift- they thought it was a broken belt sander LOL. For serious deep tissue therapy- they are well worth the price you sold them for!

This week I had my biggest sale of the year. I was ecstatic! I’ve been trying to save money to get a much-needed allergy test done at a naturopathic doctor’s office, and selling this mah jong set paid for both the visit and the tests. I got the set for FREE, so this is pure profit. It took quite a bit of research to identify the “flower” tiles as scenes from a Chinese opera, but I think that information helped it sell, and now I know what to look for in vintage mah jong sets. I originally had it listed at $1,200 or Best Offer, but after a few months of really lowball offers, I offered it at auction starting at $579.99. Took three tries, but Sunday it ended at $641.00. And I just got positive feedback from the buyer, so now I can relax.

I love these old mah jong sets. They’re so gorgeous and well made. I’ve had several of the styles that look like they’re in a little suitcase over the years, but your looks much older than mine. Where did you find the detail about the flower tiles? Were you able to find a mah jong site for reference?
