I have not yet gotten results of my claim, but I thought these instructions would help you find this very obscure link. P.S. Never use SmartPost. If you’re reading this, you know how the customer service dept for SmartPost is the seventh circle of hell.
1. Go to “My eBay.”
2. Click “Selling”
3. Click “Shipping Labels”
4. Change search period from “Last 7 days” to “Last 31 Days” or however long it’s been.
5. Locate the tracking number of the package.
6. Click “More Actions”
7. Click “Submit SmartPost claim”
8. Prepare to wait 21 business days (Mon-Fri) to maybe receive an answer. -

I JUST did this a few minutes ago. Talked to a Fed Ex dude who instructed me how to submit the Smart Post Claim through the eBay site. We will see what happens now. What I find odd is that when I submitted my claim on eBay, I was not given an option to submit a photograph of the damaged item or to give any extra information. Only “Click to submit”. Maybe they will check the messages the buyer and I sent each other, as well as the picture of the damaged item.
The only other time I have submitted a claim was through USPS. It took about 5 weeks to get my money back.

I like how they put right up top “Claims for damage are only potentially valid if the tracking status of your package states, “Damaged, unable to deliver shipment – Please contact shipper/merchant for details.”. I have never seen a status like that on any package delivered, by any of the shippers.
Do any of the 3rd party insurance companies provide insurance for SmartPost?

You’d see that message ALOT more if USPS took over liability at the handoff. It is a rigged system that is set up to encourage Fed Ex employees to go ahead and hand off an obviously damaged box. There is no responsibility of the USPS employee to refuse any package.
It will not change because that would be the end of smart post. It is cheap because there are no damage claims, even when purchasing insurance!

Hmm. I am going to have to think carefully about my use of Smart Post. I initially thought of it like Media Mail, but at least you can buy insurance for Media Mail. It doesn’t look like anyone insures Smart Post.
The one good thing is, if I *do* use SmartPost, I no longer feel obligated to bring it to FedEx. I read somewhere that SmartPost had to be handed to FedEx, otherwise they wouldn’t honor insurance claims. I’ll save myself a trip, and drop off everything at the post office!

Ugh. Just had to do this for a typewriter that was damaged in transit.
Has anyone had good or bad luck with shipcover/smartpost? Just wondering if I should write the money off, or expect a chance of getting it.
The typewriter was well packaged, and was obviously damaged during shipping based on my listing pictures, and the ones my buyer sent when they opened the claim.

you can use FedEx SmartPost in Canada?

I use a cross-border shipper to get my packages across into the US, giving me access to USPS/FedEx. If I were limited only to Canadian options, not to my knowledge, nope.

Just an update — I received a credit for the purchase price only of my lost SmartPost item. It is shown as a credit on my eBay fees invoice. I did not receive a message or anything – I had to look for it.
