GSP: 1 CanadaThe Riding Spurs were a late in the day estate sale purchase for $10. Second best sale of the month was a C Ration can of Pan Coated Chocolate Discs (M&M’s) from 1970 that went for $81 at auction. A BOLO are pre 1975 military C Rations that still have the accessory package in them. Many times the outside of the box may be gross from one of the cans leaking, but if the accessory pack contents list cigarettes your in the money. Note that not all of the packs had cigarettes and they stopped including them after 1975.

This was a very frustrating week to say the least. Ebay screwed the pooch with their updates. I’ve had to modify my listing process because they changed how uploading photos works in the app. I fought through it and went through all of my items to fix all my flat rate shipping items. I finished up Thursday morning fixing my items. Up through Wednesday my store was ROCKING and I was on pace to blast past $1k for the week again. Then Thursday, coincidentally as I finished fixing my whole store, my sales nosedived off a cliff! I went from having $200-300 in sales a DAY to being lucky to sell 1-2 cheap items a day. Yesterday I had ZERO sales. I’m not even getting much offer action either.
I only made $145 Thursday – Sunday on 7 sales. I hate being a conspiracy theorist, but I have had VERY consistent sales for several weeks which coincided with my increased listing. The only thing that changed this week was ebay’s site issues.I checked my promoted listings impressions and clicks data, and there was a significant drop in impressions and clicks from Wednesday- Sunday of about 20% each day for impressions and a 25% drop in clicks.
Both numbers rebounded yesterday to normal numbers consistent with what I was seeing prior to Thursday. This tells me something definitely changed on ebay that affected customers ability to see my items.
I wish they would provide those metrics for all my items outside of promoted listings.
Scavenging wise, the highlight of my Saturday yard sale adventure was a sale that had a bunch of lacoste clothing. I bought 12 items for $1 each. Score!

Disappointing for sure how some of the eBay algorithms are or aren’t working. At least they are tweaking during summer but still annoying.

At Retro: Interesting on your notice of the drop in clicks and impressions on Promoted listings. Ours was the same (and I mean like a cliff). Now, we had a SixBit reset of our listings (store dropped from 3,200+ to only 700+ active, then items relisted and we were whole again in 2 days, so I thought this was the reason.
PS – I have a bug list into eBay on the # of Impressions the Promoted Listings screen shows. It is inflated by about 300%-400%. Compare the Impressions on Promoted Listings to Impressions on Traffic. Traffic is the accurate one…

I like the reddit idea. I find this forum clunky and feel like the other subjects outside of the current podcast are kind of hidden and I never see them unless I just happen to remember to go there. I’ve been doing reddit for years and I think you would be able to see the subjects and topics easier. You could also ask for moderators, I don’t think that Scav Life mods would have too big of a job.

Good Morning! Congratulations Jay & Ryanne! You are forever advancing!
Yes, shipping labels were a bit funky last week. I could not find the Priority small flat rate box as an option after already packing items to ship. Fortunately I had padded flat rate envelopes and just put the boxes in them and shipped for a few pennies more. This happened on a rushed early morning when I was attempting to get all my packages out before heading to work. Would have been trouble if I was a newbie or a more casual seller.

Starting out on my 82 shipments from the weekend, was very pleased to hear mention of some of my favorite Western Mass towns. I started listening to you guys at Amherst College. I’ll be going up there next week, stopping by Northampton’s new marijuana dispensary.

I loved the call about the free stuff from baseball games! Edgar and I went to a game in San Francisco and they were giving out duffle bags, so when we were leaving we saw that a bunch of people left them in their seat, still wrapped! So of course we picked them up and put them on Ebay when we got home. We are selling them for about $16 each.
I also like the idea about Reddit… my kids got me into reddit and it is the best thing ever.-
07/01/2019 at 11:49 am #64327
That reminds me of a Marshall college football game my dad and I went to back in the late 90’s. The back of the ticket said we could turn the ticket in for a free Powerball ticket. After the game was over, we noticed there were tickets laying EVERYWHERE. If memory serves me correct, we collected just over 200 tickets. We got them all turned into powerball tickets and won…. twenty something bucks..
Ah it was still fun though!

Thanks for the podcast!
I was away last weekend so I didn’t post my numbers but here they are for this week:
Total Items in Store: 3137
Items Sold: 30
Total Sales: $708
Cost of Items Sold: $67
Average Price Sold: $23.61
Average Cost of Item: $2.26
Highest Price Item Sold: $64.95 Hewlett Packard HP41C HP 41C Vintage Calculator for parts
Number of items listed this week: 72
YTD Sales: $24862
YTD sales compared to this time last year: +14%
Average age of items in store (in days since listing): 383
Average number of days between listing and selling this week: 180
Median age of sales (in days, between listing and selling): 72
Sell-through rate (for the week): 0.96%Sales were a bit down this week. It’s my first sub $1000 week since April. This was at least partly due to not being able to go garage-sale-ing and doing less listing last weekend.
When you were talking about the woman on Youtube selling tchotchkies were you referring to the Crazy Lamp Lady? I like watching that because those are things I would never think to buy. Speaking of YouTube, I stumbled across Spinach Eaters postcard YT channel. I didn’t know he had a channel and I watched it for a couple of hours while listing on the weekend. My own experiment with postcards didn’t go well and I don’t think I’d try it again.
Moving to Reddit: Have you thought about asking for volunteers to help moderate / administer the current forums instead? Maybe that would take some of the load off the two of you?
Package size restrictions. I saw the issue with various shipping options being hidden based package sizes at shipping time. (If you adjust the dimensions, those options re-appear. In addition, over the last day or two I noticed that eBay now wont let you list an item where the package size is bigger than the method chosen. eg: I tried to list a game console today. I know it will fit in a medium flat rate box but the rough dimensions I entered were bigger than the medium flat rate box so it stopped me listing until I fixed them. This is an annoying “feature” for me but probably helpful for new sellers.
Hope everyone has a great week!

Glad your back. Yes, crazy lamp lady is who I was mentioning. Terminal 99 is another person we’ve interviewed who’s on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/terminal99
We like the idea of moderators, though its pretty low volume compared to other forums we’ve run. The real key is the clunkiness of BBpress, the platform we use. Its made by WordPress but not updated very much. We like the idea of just letting Reddit handle the backend and we just have fun.
Though Im hoping that we dont attract nutters on a more public forum.

The barrier to entry is MUCH lower on Reddit. You’ll get alot more casual users there as well as trolls.
I’ve been reading in the r/keto forum over there lately and the majority of folks are awesome. Every single thread seems to have at least one troll commenter though.I understand your desire to simplify though. Do what is right for you guys.

Yep. I watch him regularly too.
Another guy that appeared in my YouTube suggestions recently is Blue Bus Dave: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqBDgN_d5avMDx7icxZiWA/videos
He is pretty prolific with videos and buys a lot of stuff I wouldn’t touch.

* Total Sales: $136.65
* Highest Price Sold: $40 – framed print Jewish themed
* Average Price Sold: $17
* Returns: 0
* Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
* Number of items listed this week: 5Tough week, but I was getting ready for vacation, so I’ve not been doing much listing. I haven’t had a chance to listen to the podcast yet, but seems pretty interesting from the comments so far.
We took the Auto Train from VA to FL. I have to agree with Jay & Ryanne; it’s not great. I couldn’t get comfortable and didn’t sleep much. The reason to go that way was to bring the car with us.
We have one week in Naples, and then one week at my parent’s house in Palm Beach county. Their friends give them stuff for me to sell, all free, and they have tons of things for me to take back. I’ll pack up the minivan as much as possible and then take it back home using the Auto Train. Because we decided we needed the minivan for business purposes, the cost for the car back and forth is definitely a deduction. Not sure about my ticket, but perhaps I can consider it partially deducible.
My father, who has owned two different businesses, questioned me about how I expense all my costs and seemed impressed that I had everything covered. All he said was that I should be more “generous” with calculating my expenses, so I’m going to take a hard look at my “business costs” for this trip.

June 23 – 29
Total Items in Store: 1387
Items Sold: 8
Total Sales : $244
Highest Price: $40 (VTG Small Farm Bell)
Average Price: $31
Returns: 0
Cost of Goods Sold: $14
Costs of Goods Purchased this Week: $20
Number of New Items Listed this Week: 23Hello all,
It was a super slow week for me unfortunately.
Thankfully I had some good sales yesterday. Yard sales were sorta a bust for us this weekend. We went to a storage unit sale on Thursday. Lots of super awkward items… a lot of paraphernalia that should have been thrown far, far away, yikes, lol. Unfortunately there were some old Sega and Nintendo games that had been rained on and looked to have had mildew on them. It was really sad. The only thing I ended up with was a Cram’s Imperial World Globe.
We found a few things Friday. Got some neat hats (keeping a Miami Dolphins hat for myself lol), a Camelbak bag, and some old board games (Hearth Throb, Girl Talk Date Line). But it was a bust for me on Saturday for yard sales, while Dan went to an auction that turned out to be a bust as well.
We got together with some friends to try out a local-ish Pho restaurant Sunday. I’m not a huge fan but I tried one of the sandwiches which was alright but everyone else enjoyed their meals. It was really nice to get out of the house and catch up.Have a good week everyone!

Hi guys! I am not averse to moving to reddit, especially if it saves you guys trouble. The threading on reddit is defininitely a lot more intuitive in how it handles conversations and sub-conversations. I find this old school forum style tricky to follow, tbqh.
I had another pretty good week.
Sales: CAD$1488, 7 items, COGS: $91 –> Item profit: $1159
Expenditures: $887 –> Cashflow: $363
Notable sales: 11 POS devices, $840
Scavenging: paid $500 for 7 Tirfor winches, and about $150 for 12 SCBA air packs. I regret buying the winches, because after much reflection I can’t in good conscience list them as “used”. Normally it’s not a big deal to risk an item being broken but in this case it could be dangerous if one were to fail catastrophically. And these are quite rusty. So I listed for parts. Should still make money but I never would have bought, had I thought it fully through.Incidentally, this June was my best month ever for total gross sales at CAD$10,506.

Number of items listed this week: 38Sales picked up a bit this week which I am happy about. I am trying to get at least 700 items listed before I go back to work in August. Ideally, I would like to have 1000 listings by then, but that is pushing it.
I have been working through a large box lot (40 USPS Large shipping boxes) that I bought for $100 in May. The seller was cleaning out her grandma’s house and the contents of the boxes were the estate sale leftovers. It has taken me over a month to go through the boxes and recycle some of the contents back to Goodwill and stash in my she shed the rest of the items and get them listed as quickly as I can.
The new building looks great! Can’t wait to see the inside!
Have a great week!

Average Price: $34

Cost of Goods Sold: $77
Costs of Goods Purchased this Week: $32
Number of New Items Listed this Week: 56I thought I was going to have a slow week. It definitely felt like it. So I was shocked that I grossed nearly $900. Looking back, I did notice a couple really nice sales that helped boost my numbers, including these 35mm slides that are going to a museum.
Regarding problems with the eBay website, I’ve been having a minor annoying issue with the site lately. I use templates a lot, specifically a general one that I created which sets up a lot of the options that are the same across the board. Well lately, I’ll click Make a New Listing and then create with my template, but my body text won’t be there. I have to go back to a previous listing and copy+paste the body. It’s just a slight annoyance but I thought I’d mention it since it was brought up on the podcast. Is anyone else experiencing this?
Not much else is going on our way. We got our trip to Seattle all planned out. Spent an evening with some close friends which was really nice. Went to a really bad auction and left almost immediately. The one diamond in the rough at that one was a set of Lifetime pots and pans, but it went sky high at the beginning of the auction. We had a taste of what storage locker auctions are like. In this particular auction, they actually dragged everything out and sold stuff off individually. But most of it should have gone straight to the trash. I did manage to score $50 worth of gift cards hidden away in some paperwork, along with a couple of Dell laptops. This week will be a lot more of the same, but that’s okay when you love what you do.

I’m still off on a non-Ebay tangent getting a remodel done on my dad’s place and doing a deep dive learning about college admissions. My part-time job is unusually busy as well. Ebay and Mercari numbers are pretty much not worth reporting. Without listing, I’m only selling between 2-4 items a week and mostly low value. Even though I make much more at my day job, I’m hurting a little missing the extra Ebay income. Definitely feeling that loss.
If you move to Reddit I will follow the forum there. I agree with another post that sometimes I probably miss discussions that I am interested in here since there are only 10 topics showing in the most recent activity section. I do enjoy the lack of trolls and nonsense in here though since I’m short on time.

Repeat Customers: 10Yesterday we made a dry run to the school where my wife will be earning her master’s degree. The program doesn’t begin until January, but we wanted to get a feel for what the 65 mile drive was like during the AM and PM rush hour. So, we headed out at 6AM and headed home at 5PM, with thrifting filling the time from 9AM-5PM. Once school starts, I plan to head down with her once a week and hit the shops while she is in classes. I usually thrift all day on Fridays, so switching to Mondays will be a big change. I will have to have all my weekends packages ready to go on Sunday night. The stores may be a bit more cleaned out from the weekend, but the area is more urban and the thrifting should be better.
Still trying to grow the store to at least 7000 items by the end of the year…only 892 to go. Growing the store is easy this time if year, but it will surely get a bit tougher when fall rolls around.
Just barely missed my $20K sales goal for June, but I’m still on track for the year at the half way point with just over $125K so far.

Hi all, I’m the person from the podcast who sold the Cubs bobblehead. Ryanne misheard me (my mistake if I wasn’t clear) as my name is Jonathan not Ryan. Thought that was a bit funny actually! Anyhow, I purchased my baseball ticket for $100. I was able to sell the item for $45.99 and the buyer paid shipping. It went within my city so it shipped quick.
I’m a redditor and wouldn’t mind the forum going to Reddit. That said the Discorse forums are a better forum format similar to this site but better https://www.discourse.org/. Just a thought.
As for sales a lot of little stuff really did sell some Snap-On tool items new in packaging I got from a charity raffle (2 items for $179.99 a piece). Headed to my first live auction tonight, should be pretty good. Wanted to get some stuff to last me listing stuff to fall (working to list 10-20 items a week) as I have a full-time job that keeps me busy.
-
07/03/2019 at 1:51 pm #64470
Nice. So you got your baseball ticket for half-price 🙂 I didnt know games were that much these days.
That does look like nice forum software, but it says “Managed forum hosting from $100/month”. Since we dont make much money here, we’re trying to go towards a free option where the site is maintained by someone else.

I’m just here to say YES – Buffalo ’66!!!
Immediately upon seeing the title for this podcast, before even listening, I sent a screenshot to my wife. We saw Buffalo ’66 when it came out, and spanning time is still an important part of our relationship vocabulary.
-
07/03/2019 at 1:56 pm #64472
Yep that’s it. I havent seen Buffalo66 since it came out in 1998. After I watched a clip, it hasnt held up well over time. This abusive dude kidnaps a teenager and is mean and cruel the whole time. Not as funny as I remember. Vincent Gallo himself hasnt really aged well either.

-
07/03/2019 at 1:59 pm #64473
It’s definitely of its time. “Man desperate for love kidnaps woman” is not a setup that would play well today…

Just a quick comment that I like the idea of doing a subreddit – already a user and would find an easy transition – plus I like that my Reddit app on my phone would be easier to navigate than this website.
Also, I am really glad that eBay does not do video. I am pretty sure that if eBay allowed video, it would quickly be dominated by beautiful people selling glamorous shit and for the rest of us, it would be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iwuy4hHO3YQ

On my active items page I’ve noticed several relisted items with over 50 days remaining, and when I look for recently listed items they are way down the page with 30-32 days remaining.
It’s only been happening the last couple of days and I see that some are back to being resisted for 30 days, all are good until sold.-

07/04/2019 at 8:16 pm #64542
Yes, they are all good until canceled or sold & get automatically relisted every 30 days.
For some reason they are being relisted for up to 60 days or some odd 30+ number of days.
A couple items I listed yesterday started at 31 days.-
07/05/2019 at 8:48 am #64553
That is very weird. You’d think it’d be easy for them to program their automatic renewal to set a 30 day time limit. Again, Im glad they’re doing all this testing an changing in the slow summer.
We didnt sell one item yesterday which is a rarity for our store.

Have been pre-occupied for other business so my quick & dirty for the week was $859 in sales, but only listed 10 items on ebay. Ttl ebay hours of ~4. I turned off best offer a couple weeks ago & not feeling it in my sales.
Lots of driving so got listen to a couple of recent podcasts! 2 comments:
#1. I think the most valuable part of the forum is members posting their weekly numbers. Please keep encouraging everyone to do so.
#2 Upside of switching to reddit forum is obvious, but there are some quirky restrictions like limited thread pinning etc..etc… Downside is all the user generated content does not link back to your site, so your giving that up. I would continue to post the same if the sub was private, probably wouldn’t post numbers, identifying info or something not widely known if sub is fully public. Good luck with your decision.

ASP: $31.46This is the week that we did a reset on our listings in our store. Bad move. You can see that our sales dropped to half of what they were in the previous week. Not doing that again. We were also down on listings as this is the week that Veronica came up to Montana to help my Mom and I sell some items in the 50 Mile Yard Sale.
This was week 1 of the kick in the gut…

Welcome back. I know you guys are busy up in Montana.
When you said you did a reset, you mean you ended all your listings and re-listed as new? If true, what do you think the lack of sales meant since I thought relisting was supposed to boost search rankings and help sales?

@Jay: the relist was basically an accident. When we turned on the SixBit feature of Custom Duration, we decided to use 58 days (to end the item in 58 days before eBay determines it to be “stale”).
Well, we had a lot of items that were on for longer than 58 days since submission, so they dropped off, and SixBit relisted them 1 at a time over about 48 hours.
So I think the massive drop hurt us because our store suddenly had little to offer (since things weren’t for sale). Plus, it just seems like it killed us in their ranking algorithm to drop that massively. And we know that eBay likes sales. When you sell, you then sell more. eBay has stated this before, that stores that are selling get a push up in rankings. So little to sell, means less sales, so we dropped.
I’m still trying to figure out what really caused the huge drop. It really came out of the blue. We saw the same huge drop in clicks on our promoted listings page that Retro (I think) stated that he saw this week.
So far, now in July, we are back to normal, but having a sudden 50% drop in clothing sales for two weeks to return back to normal is just weird. In all the time I have tracked this data, never seen that before…

Boy did I dodge that. I saw the Ebay statement about going stale [like we all have discussed in the past] and had on my To-Do list to discuss with you or Dustin, Steve, etc. about setting the custom time frame to end just a day or two before Ebay hits that mark. But with everything else I had going, it was still on my To-Do list.
I also still have about 600 or so listing that I need to clean up from the way we had them set up on WonderLister. Those do not have a SixBit wrapper on them yet, but do have an “Allocation Plan” on all of them.
That is why I am wondering why SB is not ending a few items here and there on the opposite platform when sold. The Allocation Plan should handle that.
But in any case, I think I know what you did. You got all those listings down and with you saying you use an hour I recall between listing, was it the scheduled listings and hour apart that took 48 hours to relist?
Right now, we are scrambling on dealing with the “FREE SHIPPING” Push Etsy is throwing on everyone, you guys included.
In short, Offer Frre Shipping IF YOU WANT, but if you don’t you won’t get any push in the searches. Those who do will be rewraded with higher placement and being included in advertising and Etsy promotions. Don’t do it and you will just be left to trail in the searches and rankings behind those that do offer FS.
So trying to figure out how best to do this, use SB to batch edit our decision and think about if we are just going to do it on Ebay as well.
Uggh..just not enough hours in the day. Got to go vacuum for Susan.
later,

@Mike: No, mostly just the volume is what took it time to get relisted.
Since we had the Auto Relist turned on, when SixBit pulled the items down, it automatically relisted them. But when it has that many to handle, it was only sending about 1 per minute. I think it just overwhelmed our computer as well as the SixBit Agent to be handling that many items.
We did the Etsy bit, but a word of caution. The good news is that your items that are $35 or more are eligible for Free Shipping, and they have a tool that you can use that will change the listing prices for you in mass. So if you had $35 + Shipping, and your average shipping cost was $10, it would change your price to $45 + Free Shipping (at least, that is what the buyer sees).
Your ACTUAL Etsy listing (and what pulls into SixBit) will show $45 + CALCULATED shipping. The “Free Shipping” on your shop is like a filter that changes what is on the actual listing (calculated) and displays it to the buyer as Free.
I have had some discussions with Etsy on this bit, and they agree that if you are going to change the price at the listing level, you should also change the shipping type at the listing level as well.
PS – And if you want to change back to calculated shipping…you have to change the prices back manually. They agreed, you should have let me go both ways, but oh well…
