I’ve been on a nice run of researching and selling World War 2 autographed photos so I am excited to get this scavenge listed — all the signatories are from the 393rd bomb squadron. I have found that these types of items are much more likely to sell when the signatures have a theme. I think that’s how a lot of collectors get attached to their particular collection.
From the same seller, I also picked up this autographed card of baseball writer Bill James. Young craig rex’s view of baseball changed dramatically when he started reading Bill James and his deeply analytical, sometimes contrarian, creative and often very funny writing. His autographs (only in a few sets) always sell well, but I realized as I was writing this post that maybe I should keep this one. Right now the only cards in my “collection” are an autographed card of Dante Bichette (fairly nondescript player but the card reminds me of a childhood memory) and a few holiday themed cards (Thanksgiving turkey, Santa Claus and I think that’s all of them). But maybe we’re up to 4 now! Who says scavenging doesn’t pay off?
What did you find this week?

@craig – I’m impressed that you even knew to buy the 393rd document. You must be a history buff. I had to look it up. Original seller doesn’t seem to know what he had, which is a common theme on many of the scavages you post about. I’ll be interested to see your listing when it’s up.

I took a lot of last week off, but I want to get this autograph processed this week along with some other WW2 autographs. I have a nice pile of them now. I’ll post the link to this one for you once I’ve created the listing.
I’m not a history buff as much as I am someone who spots trends and enjoys doing the research. As you said, a lot of the sellers I buy from (mostly the big consignment sellers in the trading card world) don’t really know what they have which is kind of the name of the game when you’re doing volume consignment. So I know by now to hunt through as many auction listings as I can and I like to look for bad titles, pictures that don’t match the listing and wrong categories. I would think that the consignors would get frustrated at these inefficiencies and mistakes, but successful consignment sales far outnumber the mistakes and I think for most people, good enough is…good enough.

@lukastreasuretrove I recognised the name Colonel Heflin. Turns out he was Base Commander of Roswell when that flying saucer had an uncontrolled flight into terrain.

I have been waiting for some Roswell and UFO autographs to get posted by this seller. With all the WW2 memorabilia they list, there must be some weird autographs in their listing pipeline. The truth is out there!

@craig-rex If the seller lists some photos of a general and a major in a office looking at some tinfoil grab ’em! Especially if General Ramey’s holding a memo 😉

https://www.ebay.com/itm/235070168544 Scavenge of the week was an RA find. Bought nine of these Christmas plates for under $4 apiece and they should do well.

Well being the early bird got me some big fat worms again this saturday!
There was a sale in my neighborhood that had no clothes- just awesome hard goods.
At that sale I bought:
- an Embroidery sewing machine (sells for $150)
- A Nikon DSLR with 3 lenses (sells for $200+)
- 2 Coleman camp stoves ($50 each)
- A Spyder convertible snow suit set (sell for $150)
- A Firestone Ride Rite Airbag kit (listing for $300 as it is used)
- And the best item: https://www.ebay.com/itm/266322366931
I paid $200 for everything. There were a couple more odds n ends in there as well, so value over $2000.
The DJ laser show systems were only $5 each. There aren’t alot of comps but $500 is based on what I could find.
At another sale I asked about video games and the guy brought out a box with a complete Wii with games and a bunch of XBOX360 controllers and games. Paid $20 for that. I have the wii listings ready for photos – list price for the system with some junk games and a few good games listed separately was $150. The Xbox stuff will sell for about $75.
Never be afraid to ask for stuff that isn’t pulled out. You never know what else could also be for sale.

I got curious and did the listings for the Spyder coat and bib overalls. They’re worth a bit more than $150. More like $300 for the pair. Nice!

Whoever is selling DJ equipment for $5, I want to get to know those people. like what’s their story? Awesome finds.
My scavenger’s resolution for next new year’s has got to be start asking about stuff that isn’t out. Anytime I’ve done that in the past (usually with library book sales) they just try and sell me their junk for too much money. But I suppose like anything else it’s a numbers game.
I have been feeling an urge to check out yard sales recently (something I’ve never really done) and your posts are definitely a big reason why. Do you bring a few hundred in cash with you every time you go out?

I believe it was a “grown mid-30’s kids get your crap outta my garage” sale at the parent’s house.
If there ever was a time to do yard sales, it is now. I’ve been doing yard sales for many years and I’ve never seen the quality stuff I’m seeing this year ever. It’s the great post-pandemic “I bought too much crap online the last 3 years” purge.
….also unfortunately because many people died and their stuff is being dispersed through family.

That’s a good point. I appreciate the info. I was thinking of hauling my butt out to Nowheresville, PA this weekend to check out a VERY early morning library sale. But maybe I will sleep in and see what local yard sales I can find. Or maybe I will get real crazy and do both. Either way, it seems like most serious eBay sellers should be checking out yard sales right now, regardless of location.

One of the YouTubers I watch pretty much spent the last year saying that yard sales were beneath them now, and now they’ve dedicated the whole channel this summer to yard sales. Lol!

I’ve noticed that this years yard sales have improved as far as interesting profitable items being sold. Glad I live in a rummage sale crazy town, almost everyday of the week you can find a sale and so many neighborhoods are organizing multiple sales. Another big annual church sale starts tomorrow.

I tried to do some research into rummage sales and yard sales this week but had trouble finding anything in my area until I checked Facebook. Even then, not sure I was finding everything. I don’t use social media much if at all, and it kind of bummed me out. I’m sure it is area specific though.

Pick a random suburb and just drive around Saturday morning.
FB marketplace set to the zip of a specific suburb will help too.
Yardsaletreasuremap app is DEAD in my area. Some people post their sales on FBMP, but most people still just do the tried & true sign at the main road.

In our town, Craigslist is still the best place to look, but people do put them on Facebook group sites and Nextdoor. We aren’t big enough for those cool yard sale apps.

Steve I’m so jealous. Rummage, school, and church sales are the best IMHO. We only have a handful here for the whole year.
