My edition of PhotoShop has run its course. I prefer editing photos in Photoshop and then listing edited photos to put on ebay. Does anyone have any suggestions for photo editing software to replace my Photoshop? I use a Mac OS.

Gimp is free and very powerful. I’ve used it and liked it.

+1 for Gimp. Been using it for years.

I use Gimp also – it’s pretty good but for easy touch-ups the photo editing software included with Windows 10 is easy to use.
The only problem with Gimp is that everytime I start it up, I think of the movie Pulp Fiction….”BRING OUT THE GIMP!” I get a crazy smile on my face and my wife thinks I’m nuts.

I use Gimp on a Mac, after losing a copy of Photoshop 8 on an old G5 Mac. I find it clunky.

Sonia, for Etsy, I used Photoshop to show the bags I made…I would use say 6 different fabrics for 1 design, then I would show all of the options on the cover photo, then the potential buyers can scroll through the photos to see close ups of the available options. For ebay, I like to crop and sharpen my photos in Photoshop because I don’t think ebay’s options for sharpening (and enhancing colors) is powerful enough for how I prefer. I have been using ebay’s options and am not really happy with how my photos are looking.

thanks daisy – good to know. sharpening and enhancing colors sounds useful. I sometimes use the fairly basic tools that come in the mac Photos app, but they’re not very good.

I pay $10 per month for a Lightroom license. I probably wouldn’t except I am familiar with it and I like to use it for the other photos I take – the ones of my other life outside of eBay.

Apeture, yes, I agree with going with what you are familiar with. I am struggling with sticking to PhotoShop and paying up for what I am used to and understand, or going the far less expensive route and learning a new software. I purchased PhotoShop when I was an elementary school teacher, we got a deep discount on it. I used to shoot weddings on the weekends, so it was very worth it. I don’t do either now, and I seldom take photos anymore out of listing on ebay, so I have a tough decision to make. I appreciate everyone’s input!

Gimp does what you need for eBay (levels, unsharp mask, cropping and straightening). I started out on Photoshop 3- as far as I remember layers came in with 5 or 5.5, issue 6 was sorted and after that it was just bloatware. A graphics programmer told me that the basic operations are part of the operating system- Gimp and Photoshop are front ends for that.
The old golf story- never bet against a player with one club and a deep suntan. The same with software- the operator who can work channels, layers and pen tool can do most everything. I can’t 🙂 but I can do ‘orrible things with the Plastic Wrap filter.

Because I’m all Chromebook I like Pixlr which doesn’t require any local software and it’s free.
Side note: I spent a weekend teaching myself how to cut out the background and replace it with white. That was a good experience. But when I found someone on Fiverr that does 15 photos for $15 – much better than I can – I am no longer doing this myself.
I still use Pixlr for basic cropping and other mods.

For removing background and simple touchup I use Bling! It, http://blingit.us/index.html. One time purchase price of $30, they have both a Windows and Mac version. Lightweight and fairly easy to learn. I also use Irfanview as a free photo editor. I have PhotoShop and Gimp but rarely need to load them.

Thanks “Old Dad”.
Are you saying Bling It removes the background without any touch-up needed? When I looked into this I could easily draw a “lasso” loosely around my object with Pixlr (it’s like photoshop) and remove the bulk of the natural background.
But then there were many other artifacts that had to be dealt with. The only way to get it right was to zoom way in, almost to the pixel level, define the exact border I want as I slowly traced around the object.
Here is a YouTube video illustrating the process. (She is experienced and make it look easy)
I also noticed eBay said at the last open they are adding a tool to do this. But then they have delayed the release. Maybe they have the same challenge.

Bling! It doesn’t use a lasso tool, but you can adjust the sensitivity of where it will cut the border. It won’t work as well with something that doesn’t have hard edges, and the lighting must be pretty good. I’ve used it long enough that I don’t really think of the settings. It takes 1-2 minutes per photo for me at the most.
I think you get a free 15-day trial to see if it works for your needs.
