Off Topic:
Anyone else watching The Handmaid’s Tale?
I’m so addicted. The only way I can relate it to reselling is that dystopian future worlds like the Handmaid’s Gilead and the Hunger Games’ District 12 are future worlds where manufacturing has pretty much ended in terms of consumer products so the people use old already made vintage items for trading or for status symbols so there is a bit of – hey I recognize that old thing – while watching.
Anyway, I’m so into the Handmaid’s Tale right now. Anyone else?

We haven’t gotten to that series yet. It’s on our list of things to watch.

I really want to see it, but its not on Netflix, and I’m not on hulu.
Anybody hear about it coming to Netflix or Amazon?I have not paid for cable TV since 2003 b/c of Netflix, which has saved me a lot of money over the years. But now that there are all these other providers (hulu, acorn, britbox), it seems like I may have to sign up for them all in order to get to see everything I want to see, and once you start adding more and more subscriptions, the savings of not paying for cable TV goes away 🙁

oh, wait a sec. I see Netflix has it on DVD – it’s in my queue now – looking forward to it.

The show has run out of book and is somehow more depressing than ever! I like how they show what the Colonies would look like.
It is seriously the bleakest show I can think of that’s airing right now. I don’t know if it would be right to say I “enjoy” watching it, but I watch it because it has many valid underlying messages to it.

As a Canadian, I was forced to read this book not once, but twice in school. I don’t think I could watch any TV show/movie based on books by Margaret Atwood or Farley Mowat…

I love Margaret Atwood. I’ve never heard of Farley Mowat? Are his books similar to MA?
I’d love to watch The Handmaid’s Tale but don’t have Hulu either. I wonder if I can sign up for a month and binge watch the first season.-

The only connection between Atwood and Mowat are that they are Canadian writers that basically every student is forced to read several of their novels no matter where you are in Canada.
I think the enjoyment of the books for me gets destroyed when you have to do a book report or presentation on them afterwards.
Mowat’s books are more about living in the barren wilderness of northern Canada and survival.

I really liked the book. I read it shortly after the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich and the two stories had remarkable parallels.

1. If you haven’t started watching it, read the book first. The book is really good an is a quick read.
2. I think it is a Hulu exclusive – there is a movie but it is different that the tv show on Hulu. I’d recommend getting Hulu just for this show – I think think they have a thing where you can get a trial month for free (or at least they did when I signed up) and then it is like 7.99 a month or $13 a month for no commercials. I’m normally against monthly charges but this one seems reasonable and valuable to me.
3. The show is done so well. Like every detail. Good stuff.
4. All the terrible stuff that goes on is based on things that have actually happened or is still happening now, the author just mashes them up into dystopian fiction.
5. The actress who plays the main character grew up in Scientology – so that sort of fascinates me – I wonder what her perspectives are on the forced religion in the story and how that jibes with her real life experience of religion. Plus, the actress, Elisabeth Moss was in the like best ever migraine headache medicine commercial (not kidding) – I get migraines & I totally remember this commercial from I think the 90s – here’s a link: https://youtu.be/LR4MNqNlRbE
6. It is sort of fun to be obsessed with a show for a while.

What I find more odd about Elisabeth Moss is that she was married to Fred Armisen. He’s pretty questionable, from what I have read…
But Armisen’s most recent ex-wife, Mad Men actress Elisabeth Moss, has been quite public about her ex-husband’s failings. She described her one-year marriage to Armisen in a New York cover story from last March:
“Looking back, I feel like I was really young, and at the time I didn’t think that I was that young,” Moss says. “It was extremely traumatic and awful and horrible.”
A year earlier, she said that Armisen has to pretend to be a “normal person”:
“One of the greatest things I heard someone say about him is, ‘He’s so great at doing impersonations. But the greatest impersonation he does is that of a normal person.’ To me that sums it up.
To keep this “off-topic,” the episode that aired last night was rough!

wow – she is really good in that commercial! Thanks for sharing, KatieScott.
I assume you’ve also seen her awesome acting in Mad Men?I look forward to seeing the show. I tried the book a long while back but couldn’t get into it – this is usually not my genre of choice so it was just too weird for me, but might be easier in the form of a tv show.

Katie Scott, I am not mad or upset about your comment, just wanted to say, I also grew up as a Scientologist and still am — on my own determinism. This forum is not about politics or religion — it is about Ebay — and we are all deserving fair treatment without prejudices. That is what America is all about.

That’s really interesting. We don’t subscribe to any religion so we’re neutral on the whole topic. I agree this forum would get boring if we argued politics or religion.
But as far as living the life of a scavenger, isnt it expensive to be a scientologist since you have to pay to level up? Is that just built into your budget? Or do you not go to auditing sessions?

Again, just to make sure it is very clear to anyone that reads this post, this blog is not about religion so I am not here to defend my personal choices or convince anyone that my way is best. I only wanted to make the point (above) that this blog is not the right place to disparage other religious beliefs. But I am always very happy to talk about my personal experiences, when asked.
Jay, to answer your question, most churches have some kind of donation system set up (titches, pew rentals, religious ceremonies, etc.) and in my Church it is set up based on the services you wish to take. So you only donate to what you want to based on the service you want. There are MANY low cost self improvement courses, books can be purchased on line (Amazon, Ebay) and you can learn how to be a counselor yourself if you want to exchange counseling services with another parishioner. And of course you can always choose to donate above and beyond, as you would in any Church, for special projects like the printing and distribution of drug education booklets or the distribution of Human Rights booklets or new building purchase and so on.
Everyone has a right to believe what they believe. You don’t have to agree with everyone. My advise is just be kind and be curious.

Cool. Glad Scientologists have a sliding scale. And I agree it’s good to be open to all ways of thinking and be honest when they work or don’t work.
(just a funny picture that reminds me that life is short)

Elisabeth Moss was also in a movie last year called “Mad To Be Normal,” loosely based on the work of R.D. Laing. He was in the anti-psychiatry movement at the same time as Scientologists were during the 1960s.

Haven’t watched the show but absolutely hated the book. I have the audiobook since my commute is a long one. I remember when the book came out around…. late 80’s and a co-worker telling me about it. Elizabeth Moss was great in Mad Men though.
