Does anyone know if you can ship 45 rpm record sleeves without the records via media mail?

Media Mail shipping is a cost-effective way to send educational materials. This service has restrictions on the type of media that can be shipped. Media Mail rates are limited to the items listed below:
Books (at least 8 pages).
Sound recordings and video recordings, such as CDs and DVDs.
Play scripts and manuscripts for books, periodicals, and music.
Printed music.
Computer-readable media containing prerecorded information and guides or scripts prepared solely for use with such media.
Sixteen millimeter or narrower width films.
Printed objective test materials and their accessories.
Printed educational reference charts.
Loose-leaf pages and their binders consisting of medical information for distribution to doctors, hospitals, medical schools, and medical students.source: https://about.usps.com/notices/not121/not121_tech.htm

huh. so you can’t ship magazines via media mail, then?
That’s bad news to me, as I was getting ready to start selling some magazines…

They don’t allow magazines because of the advertising in them.

this says periodicals are acceptable.
then it does say “Media Mail packages may not contain advertising.”
but that’s a vague statement, do they mean there are to be no ads in the periodicals? they aren’t clear.

I should ask – are the sleeves blank?

I’ve shipped literally thousands of 45s through Media Mail and never had a problem. This includes individual records as well as large lots of 500 plus.

Ryanne: While vague, we have always been told no to magazines via Media Mail due to the advertising (like Steven said).
Regarding record sleeves…that might work for media mail.
All this said…it is only an issue if they open the package. So, good luck if you get caught.
PS – Be prepared for your package to be opened if it is Media Mail and heavy. Every time we sold a book set…they opened the package to verify it was books.

Regarding advertisements in magazines… if it is a 50 year old magazine I can’t imagine that would be breaking the rules. We have sold some very old magazines.

Magazines with advertising, no matter how old, are a no-no. (As I understand it). Magazines without ads (such as the early issues of American Heritage magazine) are ok. But most magazines do contain ads.
I agree, magazines from years ago should be excluded since the advertising is clearly no longer valid. But I’ve never seen anything in postal regs that makes an exception.
As to paper sleeves for 45 rpm records…without the records? My feeling is no, not media mail.

Ryanne, LOTS of people mail magazines media mail. Most don’t get caught. But I think you’ll find it is a violation.

How about yearbooks? I heard NO on that.

I have a few yearbooks for sale. When I looked it up, they were not allowed in Media Mail.

I know I’m a little late to the discussion but I don’t think you can send record sleeves through media mail. You can send records, which is the media, not the sleeves.
I hadn’t heard about yearbooks being excluded from media mail, but I guess that does make sense since there are ads in them.
I know Chuck Rozanski, owner of Mile High Comics in Denver, was arguing with the USPS that older comics and magazines should be able to be sent media mail since the ads are stale.

My guess is, yes, what Rozinski is arguing makes sense, BUT…what would be the cost for the USPS to inspect all those packages and then determine whether they are the right vintage or not?
I think the blanket exclusion is probably the only affordable way to handle it, from the USPS view.

Yes, I’m sure you’re right. A blanket exclusion is the most affordable way to handle it.
