I noticed a few days ago that something changed for me when printing out a shipping label in the insurance field, the default is no longer “Shipsaver” and has now defaulted to “USPS Priority Mail Insurance”. I find this really convenient and glad eBay made this small change!

This is interesting. I’ll need to remember to check and see if it’s the default now for me too. It’s always been one of those little annoyances every single time I shipping priority to make sure I changed that box from shipsaver to USPS.

Oh no… This morning… it has reverted back to the original way – Shipsaver is back to the default again and I have to manually click over to Priority. What is going on? This changed within the last 12 hours… I should have just kept quiet. Sorry Everyone! Bummer!!

yeah, it goes back and forth between the two for me even though I only use Shipsaver maybe once a year. No rhyme or reason to it.

I’d be annoyed, too, but just wondering if there’s any reason people prefer USPS insurance over Shipsaver? Shipsaver has much lower prices and, in my experience, their customer service is excellent.

Hi Terri,
Shipsaver is probably “better” – but I like to take advantage of the free USPS insurance, so I always have to switch it manually. -

So, ebaymom, in order to get the included $50/$100 (depending on your TRS status) of insurance for priinting Priority Mail labels through Ebay, you have to check the box to insure each item?
Oops! I’ve never done that. I just assumed that the insurance was automatic if you printed through Ebay. Didn’t realize you had to go through the step of actually checking the insurance box. Guess it’s a good thing I’ve never had a lost or damaged package under this assumption.
I thought you were talking about insuring items over the $100 level or First Class items. That’s the instance where I use Shipsaver.

Hi Terri,
Yes, I am under the impression that you have to physically check the box to get it (that’s why I wish eBay would make USPS the default, I use it 99.99% of the time and I just forego insurance for first class or parcel items.) – I have never had to file an insurance claim either way, but the few times I have sent larger orders over $100, I either just go with $100 USPS and only a few times have I paid extra for Shipsaver for a really valuable item. Anyway, make sure you check the box to get your free USPS insurance when shipping priority.

No, you do not have to check the box to get the insurance. That box is only for additional insurance when you need to go over the $50/$100 amount. The few times that I’ve had things break, I never checked the box, and I did get refunded.
So, please, don’t worry about the box unless you need additional insurance! It’s an extra step you don’t need to do!

Hi Sharyn, Well, thank you very much – this is news to me… On the shipping page, I always thought you had to specifically request the insurance (because you can only see it as a line item when you “ADD” it.. I assumed if you didn’t see it added, then it wasn’t an automatic thing.) Thank you for verifying that you have been refunded through USPS without checking the box. Are you TRS? Did you get the full $100 value without explicitly adding it? I am not sure how USPS would know that one is TRS and qualifies for $100 without taking the extra step – that is what concerns me. Thank you so much for your help. 🙂

I am TRS, but I don’t think that I’ve ever needed to use over $50. Or, at least, the one time that I did I had insured with Shipsaver.
I guess that would be a question for eBay, but I would assume they would know from the tracking number.

Thanks again, Sharyn!

It makes sense that Sharyn was able to get refunded for items less than $50 without checking the USPS insurance box, b/c that’s what everybody gets for free with priority mail, whether you purchase it through ebay or not. I’m always a tiny bit worried about items in the $51-$100 range – will I get the full $100 of insurance if I don’t check the box, so I’ve been checking it. As you said, a question for ebay, but I don’t trust the reps to know the answer, so I’ll just keep checking the box until enough other scavengers report in that they were able to get refunds from USPS in the $51-100 range without checking the box.

Priority insurance is automatic, if you check the insurance box for items under $100 TRS or $50 for all other sellers you are going to unnecessarily be paying for insurance.
No box checking necessary unless you want more insurance for an item worth more than $50/$100. -

“if you check the insurance box for items under $100 TRS or $50 for all other sellers you are going to unnecessarily be paying for insurance.”
not true. When I check that box for items under $100, the insurance cost is $0.
“Priority insurance is automatic”
But is it really automatic for items in the $51-100 range for TRS sellers? Have you had experience getting reimbursed for such items without having checked the insurance box? Just looking for actual proof that it works. -

Thanks Sonia… I second this – if anyone has experience with a $50+ USPS insurance claim and is TRS and didn’t check the box – please speak up!

Yes, at least 3 or 4 times over the last four years of being TRS I’ve had claims of between $50 and $100 that were covered by USPS.
Checking the box is only for extra insurance over and above what Priority and TRS gives you. -
