The title is in jest. I despise all caps titles. To be fair, I also loathe all lowercase titles. I generally look up items I am listing and use the “Sell Now” option from a sold listing. I try like hell to find one that is NOT IN ALL CAPS. They are often hard to find. Is this just me or do others feel as I do? Is there a strategic reason sellers use all caps?

All caps means you are yelling. Maybe people feel that if they “yell” buyers will see it better. Or, maybe it will stand out better. Or, the seller is to lazy to worry about capitalization. Whatever, I think it is wrong.

Often the description is in all Caps as well. I think its a generational thing. Older people tend to do ALL CAPS.

When I was in college, I had to take drafting courses along with a DOS-based AutoCAD classes. Manual drafting was still a thing at some employers at the time.
When doing a drawing by hand, we had to do all the call-outs, etc in ALL CAPS. I’ve used all caps when hand writing/printing ever since. It’s also a fall back for those of us with very poor penmanship if we want people to understand what we wrote…
I find older generations, like my parents tend to either have very nice handwriting, or go the ALL CAPS route on Christmas cards, etc.

Ha ha indeed it is so annoying. The message I get is that the seller is clueless and apparently does not realize not only that it is considered rude but also that all caps is harder to read. (People recognize words more easily and quickly by their contours.) If just the title, I agree with Sharyn on the intentional attempt to make their listing stand out. The same irresistible and brainless impulse that makes them write “WOW!” or “LOOK!” in the title.
But if you see the entire listing is in all caps, they are probably unintentionally doing it, having never heard of the unwritten rule. Yes, Jay, codgers like me tend to do it. Then there are the military vets (also like myself, but even younger ones too) who got in the habit of typing and seeing all caps in official message traffic at work and not having the visceral negative reaction to it that others may have. I will have to confess to initially doing it in my first days on the internet in the ‘80s until I got called on it a few times and changed my tune.
For me there is one positive to the all caps listings: Anything like that that annoys buyers and keeps them away can make the listing good snipe-bait.

The next question is: what do people feel about capitalizing KEY WORDS in a title?
We used to highlight the important parts of a title for a long time: Vintage PENDLETON Wool Plaid COAT Large
We stopped doing it several years ago because it seemed silly. Plus someone told u that Google Shopping strips out listing with capitalization if words. No idea if this is true.

My vote is for silly. Don’t know about Google Shopping.

Way back when, Griff (ebay radio) use to list in all caps, claiming an item would sell better. That being said, I’ve often wondered if the reason we see all caps in our Sold searches is because they do sell better. It would be interesting to experiment and see.

Interesting point! Anyone willing to experiment?

When I’m buying, I pay it zero attention.
When I’m listing and searching for a sell similar listing, I avoid them. If I feel lazy at that moment, I’ll occasionally go ahead and use the caps title.

Not a fan of the all caps. I find it harder to read and just have a negative reaction when I see it. Then I remind myself that it is probably generational, but I still don’t like it. LOL!

Jay, I think that’s correct about Google Shopping. They don’t want all caps.

I did a quick check and found my listings that have caps for keywords in the title appear in Google’s regular search results and Google Shopping. Not all my listings appear in Google Shopping but I didn’t discern a pattern based on the limited searching that I did.
I generally put my main keywords in caps. I have no compelling reason for doing that other than I think that those words will stand out when skimming down a page of similar items.

When I have to sell similar w/ an item that uses all caps, I just plug it into http://www.titlecase.com and copy it back over. Easy!

I’ve used all caps in my titles (not descriptions) for the past 10 years or so. I’ve never done the experiment to see if it makes a difference, but I doubt that it would. I mostly do it for the sake of simplicity

Found out yesterday that there’s at least one word that should be capitalised- PYREX. So long as it is PYREX and not pyrex…
