Variations of this have happened before, but this one was worse:
Buyer makes offer yesterday, then pays this morning. Almost immediately after paying, they message saying…and I quote…
“I DID NOT ORDER THIS, IT WAS DONE ERRONEOUSLY……
I AM AN INVALID AND 97 YRS. OLD”To be clear, I asked if they wanted to cancel (email evidence for eBay and PayPal just in case)
“AGAIN !!
I DID NOT ORDER NOR DID I RECEIVE THIS ITEM”Pretty good and quick typing for a 97 year old invalid too…
I just don’t get it. What is the endgame here? Why? Why pay and THEN cancel? Looking for good feedback? Was the account hacked and this real person just found out?
I contacted eBay, they just said to cancel and message them that if they feel they were hacked to contact them. They can’t do anything on the account unless that person contacts them (though I wish that as a seller, we could at least put the account on some type of watch list for suspicious activity to help weed out hacked accounts or suspicious buyers).
I just don’t get what the point of all this was.

I vote for crazy. It doesn’t make any sense.
I have a weird situation, but maybe more straight forward:
Last week, I sold a glass cake plate and received an email from PayPal almost immediately after that a case had been open. I called PayPal, and they said that the buyer had a number of cases open on their account and that I should not ship the item.
Yesterday, the buyer contacted me (through eBay) asking why they hadn’t received the item. I responded back that I couldn’t because of the open case in PayPal.
Perhaps she is opening cases as she buys something hoping that some sellers will ship it out. Then, she won’t have to pay for them.
Personally, I’d love to get rid of this case plate. Glass stuff is hard to sell. According to GoDaddy, this person bought something from me about 9 months ago. Those items were also very slow moving. I’d like her as a customer, but I don’t know what is going on …

I’ll guess that it’s a liar. They sent an offer to you and in the meantime, found it cheaper elsewhere or changed their mind. Rather than be honest they told an outrageous lie. Not many invalid 97 years old are that ebay savvy. And if it is in fact a liar, I’m glad they now have to go through the hassle of contacting ebay if they want to use their account again. 🙂

Agree with the above. Guy made an offer and then found a cheaper one. Or crazy. Or was drunk, purchased overnight, and then realized it was a big mistake when he sobered up.
We just had a guy haggle over a $60 hat. He talked us down to $20 (slow day). We accept and send an invoice. He writes back that he doesn’t buy used clothing so we need to cancel the sale. People are strange.

I’m am perplexed by the buyers who make offers which I accept, but then they either don’t pay or send me a message such as “no longer interested”.
I have handled this two different ways. One is to ignore the “I’m no longer interested, please cancel” messages, and let the unpaid item process continue to resolution, i.e., I get a final value fee credit and the buyer gets an unpaid item strike.
The second way is to cancel the sale for the reason “buyer requests cancellation”. I get a final value fee credit and the buyer goes along on their merry way.
The first way gives me a sense of “justice” because there is the consequence of an unpaid item strike for the buyer.
The later seems like it just rewards the ridiculous behavior of making offers with no intention of paying (which seems to be rampant on ebay).
The first way takes a week before the item can be relisted. The second way the item gets relisted immediately with the potential of selling again.
I don’t know – the business part of me thinks option 2 is smarter. I’m in this to make money, not to teach a civics lesson. But man it really chaps my a$$ when this happens. And the instances of it seem to bunch up together. Maybe they don’t but it seems like it. Full moon kind of thing.
I wonder if the new payment system will eliminate this nonsense. It’s unique to ebay and completely unnecessary IMO.
Do you guys just cancel? Does it drive you nuts like it does me?
I know it’s only 1% of transactions, blah blah blah. But jeez. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?-

@ Speckled Goat: Amen. I have the same tug of war on a regular basis.
Accept and cancel again this morning.
Offer on some high end boots overnight, wake up and accept. Immediate cancellation.
At least this time the buyer said he was told that the offer wasn’t accepted so he purchased some other boots.
This is another reason that I have a “ceiling” on my best offers. You make an offer above that price, I auto accept. Veronica doesn’t do that (but she did on this listing now)… 🙂

In spite of my complaining, I do love the best offer option. Since changing all my listings to best offer my sales have skyrocketed. Half the day is spent hand wringing though! How long has it been listed? How slow have sales been? How far do I have to ship? How many feedback do they have? I’m still in Veronica’s camp of deciding case by case, but I have a feeling I’ll eventually come over to Team T-Satt & auto accept/decline, just to save my sanity. And if the new payment system eliminates the “please cancel” or “no longer interested” jacka$$es, life will be good!

Goat: I have to say, that is one thing I love about Poshmark. Before you can offer on Poshmark, you enter your payment information and you are committing to a sale. So when the offer comes in, you have 24 hours to accept and when you do, the sale is binding and the buyer is charged.

Yeah, all possible.
The weird part is they made the offer yesterday, then pays this morning. Then after they pay, they cancel. Why wait, then pay, then in 5 minutes cancel?
Just weird…
I thought I had figured out a PayPal scam in this that fit the scenario, but when I called eBay and walked them through it, they said that it can’t work. They tie all refunds to the original PayPal account that was used on the sale, so my thought wasn’t it.

They are probably crazy. If they are truly elderly and 97, they may have dementia, which causes some …interesting…and irrational thought processes.
I had a lady make an offer on a pair of shoes. She lived in Florida and I thought the whole thing was odd because she was surfing eBay while her part of Florida was getting blasted by a hurricane. Priorities? Eh, whatevs! Let’s buy some shoes!
I accepted her offer, she pays a few hours later, and then the next morning sends a snotty message saying she never bought these shoes and implied I’d somehow hacked her account and was scamming her. So I’m guessing she got drunk at a hurricane party and bought some Ferragamo’s that she later regretted, lol.
Hopefully, a little drunken shopping spree is the only regret she had from the night before. 😉

I had a situation where I sold a LEFT SHOE ONLY (amputee shoe). Buyer purchased the shoe (Nike)– and because I have had buyers NOT read even the title where it clearly says at the front of the title, “left shoe only” (and it says it in five other places too) I contacted the buyer by eBay email to confirm that they truly want the item and that they understand it is one shoe.
When they did not reply, I texted, when they still did not reply I sent an email to their personal email. Finally I got an email back on my personal email (not the Ebay Email) that yes, they want the item. I sent the item.
45 days later they opened a case with PayPal saying that they did not buy the item. PayPal protected me but I told PayPal that this person did in fact double confirm (once buy making the purchase and then the second time when they sent the email) that they did in fact want the item.
Just a note: selling right or left shoes only is a real pain in the butt!!! I don’t recommend it.

That “left shoe” story reminded me of the aftermath of The Great Flood of Uphill in 1981. Found some brand-new Clarks’ Polyveldts under a hedge, several miles from the nearest shoe shop. All left foot.

I was embarrassed just recently at being the buyer in a buy-cancel-buy scenario, but I’ve hung around with you guys long enough that I messaged him to know I wasn’t a total loon! The screw on a bobbin case fell out, and we couldn’t find it, so we ordered a replacement. Then we found it, so we cancelled (within about 30 minutes of the order and on a weekend, so it couldn’t be shipped anyway.) Without a word, the seller cancelled and refunded. Then we discovered the screw had stripped, so I had to buy it again – with a message explaining what had happened. Again, without a word, the seller just processed the order. I guess he’s dealt with enough crazy buyers in his day! 😉
Just to let you know that not every cancellation is crazy or a scam, although the OP’s person does sound hinky!

I just put the cancel request in as quick as possible and be done with it. I don’t give a crap what the reason is – just thankful the person stated they want to cancel rather than go radio silent on me so I have to wait for the unpaid item case. -

I just had a buyer last night with a Florida address, but told me in a message that that isn’t their address and provided me an address in Cyrillic writing in Russia to send the item to….
Ugh…
Cancelled the sale.

Ha, was reading this thread earlier and realized I hadn’t had one of these in a while, then just now accepted an offer and got “Please cancel, I am buying from another seller” right after. Nope, enjoy your unpaid item strike, bud.

I did have a moment of smug enjoyment with one of these.
Best offer, I accept, then get “My account was hacked, please cancel this.” I’m from the “Cancel and move on” camp, so that’s what I do.
Then the buyer sends me another offer on a different item! I assume she just didn’t notice it was the same seller.
I reply to her, “You just told me your account was hacked.” And ignore the offer.
She has the nerve to message me later and ask if I’ll accept the pending offer. No acknowledgement of her “hacked” account.
I message her back, “Sorry, I can’t sell to you because you told me your account was hacked.”
Then I blocked her, obviously. Felt good.

Here’s a strange one I’m in the middle of.
Buyer makes a .99 offer on a 99.99 item with a message to call him, no number included, then I receive a message to look up his info and call him, he wants to talk about the item and has things to trade.
I ignore all of it save for deleting the original offer.
Then I receive a reasonable offer of $75 so I accept, then receive another message to call him, I message back that I not interested in trading…and that’s where it’s at, waiting for payment.
Has 0 feedback from Arkansas, perhaps it’s a misunderstanding of how eBay works but I’m not calling anyone to talk trades, I could report it to eBay as this falls outside their selling guidelines but I’ll just open a case of non payment as soon as it’s possible.-

We had a recent unpaid item. It was a piece of artwork for $500 that the buyer didn’t pay for. We let the unpaid item assistant automatically cancel and relist.
The buyer sent us a message yesterday with a smiley face. Weird. So I asked why he didn’t pay.
He said:
“Just internet goofy. I couldn’t pay for an item and you reported my other account, just wanted to mess with you a little.” -

The trader probably wants to trade you for a cashier’s check that he’ll be sending to you in the mail. It’s for much more than the price of the item, so if you could just cash it and send him back the difference in amazon gift cards, that you purchase in cash that would be great.
(Sarcasm in case it’s not obvious.)

I had someone on the weekend ask if I combine shipping, which I had no issue doing.
They then responded with some very long convoluted story asking me to place 14 items of mine on hold for them until they get paid either this Friday or next Friday and they can try to get a new credit card form their bank after they get money in their account that to buy them…
Not sure what the end-game was for this person…didn’t respond.
Wish eBay would build some sort of spam filter on messages…would love it if they could get rid of buyers form countries I do not ship asking questions.
