Thought I’d share my latest shelving experiment. My friend found this idea online for using cinder blocks and 2x4s to create shelves. It’s very heavy duty and completely modular. I built two of these shelves and it cost about $20 more than one heavy duty metal shelf at Costco.
For each shelf, I used 18 8x8x16 blocks, 18 8x8x8 blocks, and 12 7′ 2x4s. Needless to say, it was a lot of work loading and unloading the blocks.

Yep, it’s a rented storage unit. Couple years ago, I filled up what little extra space I had in my apartment, so I finally decided to rent a storage space. Best eBay decision I’ve made thus far. Sales increased drastically after that because I quit worrying about what I could buy. I was hesitant to get one because of the added monthly expense, but it quickly paid for itself each month and then some.
I see a lot of people on here who say they only have a set amount of storage space because of where they live. Storage units are everywhere, so just bite the bullet and get one. You’re seriously limiting your growth potential it you don’t have enough storage space.
Have almost filled this storage unit up. I might get a climate controlled unit next, so I can really clear most everything eBay out of my apartment. My goal is just to use my apartment for photography and as a packing and shipping station only.

Thank you for posting these photos! I came up with a very similar system about 10 years ago. Not only is it extremely sturdy but it also meets the requirements of rental storage places to NOT attach anything to the walls. The cost of one floor to ceiling cinder block shelving unit was about $70. I put several of these up in climate controlled rental units and have never looked back. I dread the day when I have to take them down though!

I am so glad I clicked on this thread. I’ve done a lot of retail arbitrage over the last week (online retailers are offering great discounts that apply even to their clearance items. It’s been my own personal Christmas. All I really want for Christmas is stuff to resell). Anyway, all of the incoming stuff is going to need to be stored. A portion of my basement is an area of just dirt flooring. Nothing is level. I store a lot of totes in there but will be needing to store more and stacking totes is becoming precarious. I’ve been eyeballing storage shelves at Home Depot and Lowes but they are expensive and I’m not sure how they’d do on uneven floors. Plus they are too heavy for me to load and unload and put together. I think cinder block shelves may be my answer! Thanks for sharing your photos!
