I had a couple really fun purchases this week, but the scavenge of week was definitely this beauty of a Mickey Mouse phone, which I won for the comically low bid price of $2.25 for a handful of reasons. The primary was that the listing was in the wrong category, another factor was the high shipping which was much less of a factor to me since I buy 25+ items (mostly trading cards and autographs) from this seller every week and they combine at a pretty decent (though often arbitrary) rate.
When I received the huge box from the seller which contained my order, and opened it up, the first piece of bubble wrap I opened contained only the phone receiver, which is just a plain black phone. I was so confused! I buy just enough that I didn’t immediately remember winning the phone, either. So I thought the seller had messed up and sent me a phone instead of something else I had ordered, which happens sometimes with these massive consignment sellers. But then I unwrapped the packaged wrapped Mickey phone and remembered my great buy. It’s in such nice condition, too. Can’t beat it.

Yeah, it’s wild how many auctions I find from these large sellers now that I am deliberately searching through every single one of their listings and doing the research on items I’m not familiar with. Things can fall through the cracks very easily. I feel bad for the consignors, but then I remember that it’s very likely anyone who sells through consignment is sending 100+ items to probstein or whichever consignment seller they use. So one item listed wrong is all part of the numbers game. It’s likely that another item or items will see a surprise bidding war and the consignor will net about the same, or more, as they would have if they listed everything themselves. It’s not for me, I like the cycle of buying and selling and shipping too much, but I can see the appeal.

I’ve been posting so many Christmas ornaments, I felt like I needed a change of pace and jumped on an auction just before closing on Thursday. Got several cool non-xmas items, but really like this combination sculptural brooch/art work by Tod Pardon. He makes jewelry that also comes with display stands so you can show it off when you’re not wearing it. I had to pay up for it, $228, but he doesn’t have much listed on Etsy or eBay and dealers are selling his pieces for $2000 plus.

Wow, that Tod Pardon piece is gorgeous! There is a terapeak sale for earrings at $225 from February 2021 and the only active listing, also earrings, is $595 and 15 watchers. Pricing an item like this is so interesting and I wonder if eBay is even the best platform for something like it. I’m confident you’ll do well with it, regardless.

Whoo boy, where to start?
On Friday I saw some estate sale signs posted on my drive to the post office during my lunch break. I stopped by to find the sale was inside this old antique shop that had been there in town my whole life. I had never been in there. There was a TON of amazing stuff from so many different categories! I spent an hour browsing and checking things. Everything was priced at around 60-80% of ebay prices. Not enough meat on the bone for me without waiting until 50% off day. I talked some to the sale runners and they encouraged me to put in some silent bids at $1 over 50% price on anything I wanted and if still available I’d be able to secure them prior to 50% off day on Sunday. I got everything I silent bid on except for a pair of lineman boots that sold. I wanted those boots, but not for $40. In hindsight I should have just paid the $40.
I showed up about 20 minutes prior to open yesterday to see what else I could get. I ended up spending $177 on my haul. There was so much more I could have got, but I stuck to the things I knew, the higher sales price items, and the quick sellers. I also decided to not come back at closing as I felt I had enough stuff. I didn’t need a death pile or really heavy large items out of this sale.

Now this one was a surprise. This was in the kitchen area. Initial research showed it would be a $30-40 item so I threw it in my bag. When I went to list it, I found it was a bit more special than I thought! I’m priced high, but should sell for $200-250.

This was the item I wanted that pays for almost the whole purchase. I paid $37 for it. Should sell for $170, but I’m always hoping to get a buyer that pays up a bit.
I have a BUNCH of guitar hero stuff in my inventory shed in the loft. I really need to get it all down and get it listed!

Another big surprise! They had 3 star wars figures from 1982 in a case along with this indy figure. I wanted the star wars figures even though I knew they weren’t really high dollar. The indy figure was just a “yeah sure I’ll take that too” item I figured I’d get $15 for. Boy was I wrong. It is in very good condition compared to comps so $150 is a realistic sales price.

I LOVED mad balls when I was a kid! I paid up for this one – $25 on Friday as I didn’t think it would still be around on half price day. They had $33 on it originally so they did work with me a bit on price.
I have plenty more to list – complete in box Teddy Ruxbin outfit and book/tape sets. A Cricket/Corky NIB Book/tape, some old gun books, and few more toys.
It was sooo much fun to lay hands on soo much vintage stuff!

Great discipline sticking to your sourcing strategy.I think you did it right in terms of getting the good stuff without buying a bunch of stuff that won’t get listed. You basically found all the cool stuff from my childhood. Amazing to see what some of it sells for. That madball especially!
