I saw a sign for a new church thrift store near my post office this week. I was too late to stop by today, but I’m already looking forward to checking it out next week. I live in a small town with a lot of thrift stores (all independent or church/religious owned) in my town and in the area, but none of them turn over their stock very often and the items just aren’t for me. I’m hoping that this new (to me) thrift store will be full of all the cool stuff that’s missing from the other thrifts.
What did you scavenge this week?

From the early-morning cattle market.
I scavenged a box set of The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan, with a nice cover picture of a Mikado in Japanese style. It’s the first electric recording, on 78 rpm discs, made in 1927 and has never been played- no marks on the labels… £1
Half-a-dozen 18th century wooden moulding planes, and a badger plane in beech and ebony. £30
A cigar box full of rusty 19th century cabinet keys, and an Apple Mac Extreme Airport modem from 2006 (it was dark, that’s my excuse, you try wandering round a market looking at boxes on the ground whilst holding a torch in your teeth). £5
An antique kitchen rocking chair £15.
Dr Phelim Daniel’s 200-page PhD thesis £1. Should get at least £1.25 for it.
Box of skeins of embroidery thread £5 (what a mess! Took me two hours to disentangle it).

My auction haul this week was full of quality items. I was excited to have won so may lots for decent prices as that hasn’t been the norm of late. Bonus that this auction delivers your winnings to your door. I’m lazy since the pandemic started and don’t like bidding on auctions that are farther away from my house than about 30 minutes, with some exceptions. I’ll always bid on his because of this. Sometimes I only win one item for a low-ball price and he still delivers. I imagine it pays off to some degree for him as I drive the prices up on even the auctions I don’t win.
In addition to the Stanley plane that I mentioned in my weekly numbers I picked up a lot of Time Life LP box sets. The previous owner was an executive with Time-Life and had several sets that were still sealed. I picked up the lot for $9 and listed the first 3 of the sets for a total of $280. I held back two sets because they are duplicates and will wait until the others sell before listing them.
Another lot had a Sangean shortwave radio receiver in excellent condition. I paid $26 for it and hopefully it will sell for $125.
I also took a risk and bought a vintage 1984 Macintosh Plus in the auction. It was in “untested” condition. These sell great if they are working but I only bid up to the price I knew I could sell it for broken. I ended up paying $89 for it, and it is broken. I was just about to list it for $99 when I decided to look up what I could get for the keyboard and mouse. Turns out the keyboard is selling for $125 and the mouse for about $80. So, listed separately for a total of $329.

This is just a run of the mill troll from Norway with a stamped bottom. It’s cute and funky. I found out while researching that some signed ones are worth hundreds. Fascinating.

Just be careful when you’re scavenging to avoid the evil norwegian trolls!
