Another ‘coincidence’ that happened to me this week. I had two items sell on eBay the day or day after another party messaged me to say they were very interested in buying that item. Both of these items had been listed for a couple of months at least with a lot of interest in them but no buyer. Bam! Right after I got a message from someone who wanted to buy someone else swept in and bought it. Surely this is just coincidence but is there someway it wasn’t? I don’t think there is anyway to test this out as it would be impossible to recreate the situation.
I think we should start tagging all of our theories, coincidences, experiments etc with certain tags so people can search them all at later dates. I’m going to tag my x files because I loved said show. I’m not making fun of peoples’ theories as I truly am a believer in some of them. I’ll add some other relevant tags as well.

I have had several items over the last 1.5 years on which I will get no action at all, but I’ll get an offer. I’ll go back and forth once or twice and then another offer will come in or the item will be bought outright.
My theory is that there was some social media blip or web story that caused more people to be looking for that specific item at the same time. That is much more plausible than ebay forcing your stale item down a casual buyers throat due to your one item out of billions getting 1-2 extra views.
What would be far more useful for me would be to create “clickbait” facebook articles with a link directly to a section of my store. For instance, Timberland boots are coming back into style. I could create a clickbait article stating how vintage Timberlands are a great fashionable deal and share pictures from my store of the ones I have for sale. If I could get a few thousand people to view that article I bet I’d sell a few pairs of shoes. If I could get a million people to view it, I bet I’d sell every pair I have within minutes.

Sounds like that could be accomplished via Pinterest.

yeah i have also had this happen, someone asks a question on a random old item. before i even get the chance to answer them, someone else buys it. i agree with all your theories. something happened on some TV show that got people searching for that item, or some article linked to that search. or your item popped up on someones collection that rotated to the front page of ebay? it’s something significant, i don’t believe it’s just a coincidence.

My opinion is that someone linked to your item/eBay search on some forum. So multiple people see the item, maybe someone messages you, while someone else bought it. As Ryanne said, this has happened to us. My logical hypothesis.
If all it takes is for someone to message you about your item in order for someone else to buy it, there’s a simple experiment you can do.
–Start a second eBay account and message an item on your original account.
–Then see what happens. My guess is nothing will happen. People message us all the time about items and they dont immediately sell.

Jay – I have noted and very much appreciate your use of the term “hypothesis” instead of “theory” (both here and on the podcast). I only just discovered this year that I have been using the word “theory” incorrectly for so long.
