My wife and I are taking a road trip from Michigan (visiting in-laws) to Portland, OR (our home). It happens to coincide with the first day of the US 127 Sale so we are planning on doing the Michigan/Ohio part of it for a day or so and then thrift our way across the county until we arrive home. Currently our plans are to drive from MI through OH to Richmond IN, then to Columbia MS, to Lincoln NE, to Laramie WY, to Boise ID, and back to Portland. I’m researching the cities we will pass through and I am looking for good local thrift stores and other picking stops. So a few questions for my fellow scavengers:
1) Any personal experience with the world’s longest gs? Tips/Tricks? I have been watching some YouTube Videos which have been helpful about other pickers’ experiences.
2) If you live near or between those cities I mentioned and you have a must-hit thrift town/store, let me know!
3) I’m starting to compile the ultimate garage sale go-kit: a backpack filled with things I might need when I’m out. Things on my list right now: Lots of small bills, small compact bags, batteries for testing electronics, magnifying glass/loop. What else do you have in your garage sale kit? I also will have some totes and bubble wrap/newspaper wrap in the car to help keep things safe.
I’m also happy to write a trip report of our adventures if people are interested! Thanks in advance for any advice!

Someone once posted to the forum asking what people have in their “garage sale kit”. I think Jay and Ryanne also talked through it during the podcast. I did a quick search, but didn’t find it. Maybe this was posted three years ago?
I usually don’t care to do much research when I buy. Maybe that is my downfall. You definitely need your cell phone with you. A black light flashlight will help determine if glass is uranium glass, and Simichrome polish can determine if something is Bakelite or similar older plastic.

@sharyn, I remember it also, and couldn’t find it either. I do have stuff for bakelite determination, but not a black light flashlight. Just found and bought a cheap one online. Good for looking for unclean hotel rooms as well! Thanks!

Depending on what you resell, a small magnet can be helpful.

I usually carry one of these fold up carts with me, especially if I’ll be parking the car, to walk a street of lined with sales. I usually find them at garage sales for less than 5 dollars.
They fold flat to about the size of a briefcase. The listing does not have a good picture of this.

Mom and I did the entire length a few years ago. My impression was most sellers do this year after year and are either picked over or high priced. There are pockets of multi-seller lots which is where YouTubers go, but they are much farther apart than they seem. Most action is Fri-Sat-Sun since that is when people are off work, mid-week is pros only (selling and buying, so fewer sales and deals). It is classic mid-west yard sale so pull over, hike across a ditch and big yard, check out yard sale, return and repeat – all day long. No or few restrooms, no or few places to buy food or drink so bring your own, and no or few places to stay on the sale route. Big dealers (furniture and yard art) did well and went home. I personally wont do it again, it has been going so long there are very few finds for the work to get to them.
My yard sale pack has lots of drinks and snacks, a magnifying glass, battery for my phone, kleenex, writing tablet, socks, and boxes, bags and wrapping.
