This was fun today: my condo has a spring and fall dumpster delivered for residents to drop off larger unwanted items. My husband pointed out that there was a mirror in it and do I want to check it out? We went to look at it and there was a crack in the mirror but we pulled out a lot of stuff for Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace and Ebay. An antique drop leaf table, 3 bar stools, a working Smith Corona electric typewriter, 4 dining chairs, a gigantic metal drying rack, about 100 beanie babies, a shopping bag of books from a Guideposts series, and 3 Cabbage Patch Kids from the 90’s. I already have sold one book.
And an accent pillow I picked up on the road a couple weeks ago sold today for $20.
I have listed everything but the beanie babies and CPKs already. We shall see what kind of money we make.

Skip racing in the docks at Bristol and Exeter was a thing back in the 1980s. These were dumpsters fitted with outboard motors. Didn’t go very fast!

Jay – my husband is very supportive. He encourages me when I make a rookie mistake, tells me I am still learning, which I am. And he’s great for the heavy lifting.
Antique Frog – did you try to sell the outboard motors ever?
I sold one of the Guidepost books for $4.95 + shipping. Today I am going to work on listing the Beanie Babies, and will get the Cabbage Patch Kids listed for sure.

@declutter978 I was just a spectator at Bristol. I don’t think the sport lasted long- I certainly wouldn’t want to be trapped underneath a capsized dumpster!

Wait – @antique-frog I did not read your post right. So they were racing dumpsters? (I forgot that skip is the British(?) word for dumpster). that is insane. I agree, I wouldn’t want to be trapped like that either.

I’m in a rural area so I don’t do much actual dumpster diving, but I do a lot of trash picking. We go out in the truck and ride “our routes” twice a week. Last fall when the first stimulus check hit and everyone was home cleaning house during covid…I literally couldn’t keep up with it, I’m still lagging behind. Cleaning cushions on a “new” 4 piece patio set we found last night. *Before and after Memorial day is always a prime time to “upgrade” your old patio furniture, or just score some for resale.
I’ve found sealed, vintage toys…gold and silver jewelry…antiques…tools…you name it. The biggest investment I have in 95% of what I’ve sold is time spent cleaning and research.

@icequeen – that sounds awesome. We love to stop and look through promising stuff on the side of the road. I just sold a framed large vintage print fro $25 on FBM that we picked up from someone’s driveway last year.

I used to tease my husband about some of the sci-fi shows he watches but then it occured to me that I watch YouTube videos of people dumpster diving so who am I to tease anyone. 🙂 I follow a couple on Instagram who dumpster dive in NYC and it’s incredible how much they find. It seems a lot easier to do that there since most garbage is set right out on the street in front of each business. I wish I had the guts to dumpster dive but I’m afraid of authority and getting yelled at.

@julie-b, maybe start a gang. One of my lady friends has just got the diving bug, and she used to be a university professor. Now she can spot a skip from half-a-mile away.
