I sold some cologne last week for around $300.
Immediately after purchase, the buyer sends a question asking if the item is new. I respond that the item is used, as stated in my eBay listing.
He then asked me for a discount because of this “problem.” I respond politely that he probably misread the listing and that I will cancel the order. After the cancellation goes through, I get a new message from him asking me to relist it and he’ll buy it right away at my asking price.
I see this kind of issue occasionally with new buyers unfamiliar with eBay and the idea of buying used items online. However, I checked his eBay account and he is a seller of perfume/cologne. Anyway, I just felt like selling to this person could be trouble later on, so I put him on my blocked buyers list.
I relisted the item a couple days later, and the same guy (same name, same address) purchased it again, using a different eBay account. He obviously realized I blocked him before, so now I’m sure he’d give negative feedback.
Does anyone have advice for this situation? Thanks.

Why do you think he’ll give you negative feedback?

I would assume he’d be mad that I blocked him from buying it through his normal account, so he might retaliate.
Also, in my experience, if the buyer is asking for a refund before you even ship the item, that’s probably a person to avoid if possible. I just got a bad vibe from this situation.

Got it. I guess you may have a buyer who’s going out of their way to get at you. There are crazy people like this out there. But that’s a lot of work, especially if they paid good money for the item.
We’ve had several sales to buyers (who we blocked) using a second ID. It’s gone fine. Usually we’ve blocked them because they start asking too many strange questions or were overly obnoxious about getting a better price. But when they see we’re serious, they buy it without issue.
Hopefully you’ll have the second kind of customer. Let us know how it goes.

i hear you, i’ve had a couple people like this, they obsessively ask questions and then ask a bunch about returning it. and you’re like ‘oh brother’ block! and they’ll make new usernames and ask the same questions. block. when it happened to me, the woman had made a 3rd username and just outright bought the jacket. she knew i was blocking her. but she got it and never returned it or gave any feedback. so it might be fine.

I decided to go ahead and ship the item to this buyer rather then attempt to cancel the sale.
I double boxed it and included a thank you note for good measure. Now, I’m crossing my fingers that all goes well.

Update: The buyer left positive feedback. I guess I was worried about nothing.

That’s good news! I bet he knew exactly what he was buying from the beginning and just wanted to see if he could get a better price. Sneaky! Glad it worked out in the end 🙂

Happy to hear that everything worked out well.
As an FYI, for anyone that absolutely doesn’t want to take a chance by going through with the second sale when someone circumvents your BBL by using a different ID, the one time it happened to me, a quick call to Ebay took care of it. Ebay canceled the sale and told me they’d prevent the buyer from leaving feedback. This was several years ago, though.

I’ve had this happen a couple times. Most recently the guy was harassing me to separate a lot of t-shirts. I went the extra mile and explained to him why it didnt benefit me to do so, He got very angry and sent multiple messages being rude. I blocked him. “Another buyer” asked me to separate the lot, I told him no, called ebay, confirmed it was the same buyer and blocked that user id. He then ended up purchasing the whole lot from me using a relatives account and I called ebay to confirm they were linked. He was reported and I cancelled the sale. Ebay made sure it was in the notes from my call that if feedback were left it would be removed. Its always scary when a potential buyer gets angry and still ends up buying your item. Its a dreadful feeling.
