Hi, Hoping someone here might happen to know what kind of lantern this one is. It reminds me of a marine lantern I sold once, but this one is iron instead of brass. I’ve scoured the net and done an image search but mainly come up with newer lamps. I tried a lamp forum on Facebook but didn’t get anything there.
Thanks in advance.

Night watchman’s lamp. I think a policeman’s lamp would have a lens, as a kind of spotlight. Then there’s blue lamps for army officers and red lamps for other ranks . 😉

There’s a couple things not quite right about it: the handle with a loop in it, the flat glass panes, the overall intentionally crude construction in a strange way. Antique lamps made glass were “hurricane” type that had a glass cylinder because the wind would blow through a lamp made like this. I think it’s a fantasy antique, a reproduction by the same China company that manufacturers this one:

Note some similar construction details. Your’s probably got a few years on it and sat in someone’s garage for a while to get a patina. The flat glass panes are a clue – you might be able to look at the edges and tell it’s modern.
Someone will still buy it.

Yes, it struck me after I wrote that a watchman would burn their hand holding this lamp lit.

Thank you all for your input. @Temudgin, your comment about it being a “fantasy” lantern makes some sense. I didn’t think about the panes being an issues, but now that you mention it, most of the other lamps I find made with panes like this are electric where the wind wouldn’t be a problem. It seems that they were working from the idea of a nautical lantern and the few examples I finally found of it are all sold with that theme. I finally found some searching on the burner model.
Here are the examples I found:

Terapeak says that the January 2021 sale went for $100 (must have been on an offer) though Worthpoint says $299. I would agree that nautical-themed is the way to go. Almost all the listings in the Antiques / Maritime / Maritime Lamps & Lighting subcategory are fantasies and repros though not all are identified as such in item specifics or description. Depends how shiny they are, I guess.
I was a being glib above about it being Chinese made because the metal nautical items are actually mostly made in India and they’ve been making them for a long time. At least 45 years that I’ve been seeing them. I still have some repro catalogs laying around here somewhere from back then. Your lantern has a good aged look to it so if it were mine I would ask in the $150 range and maybe take an offer as low as $75, depending on how long it takes. It’s worth that as a decorator. As long as I don’t say it came off the Santa Maria I can sleep at night. 🙂

@temudgin – You made me smile with the Santa Maria comment. I went ahead and posted it at $75 to try and get rid of it fast. I purchased it in a lot of Railroad lanterns and this was kind of an odd ball out. It has some significant rust, though it is still pretty solid. Always appreciate your input.
Oh, and regarding the $299, I consider stopping my Worthpoint subscription every time I see that. Considering how often some of us price high on our fishing expeditions, there are a lot of incorrect prices out there on items sold buy it now. I still have a painting hanging on my wall that Worthpoint says I sold for $6750.
