Somebody bought a clock a few weeks back. Today I get this message out of the blue, “Hey I sent the clock back did u get yet”. No previous message about an issue and no return request. I’m like I hope you at least have a tracking number for that shipment.

Yeah, with random messages like that, we wait for them to open a return case. eBay has a clear return system. If a buyer chooses to work outside it, they’re on their own.

It sounds to me like someone just fishing for a refund. They figure that one seller out there would give them some money back.
Early this year, I sold a leather bag with a vintage brand called Land. The buyer sent me a message saying that it didn’t feel like an authentic Land bag. I messaged back saying that Land was a small unknown brand that wouldn’t be worth copying. Never heard back.

Do you guys issue a refund if you receive the item back but no return case is filed?

I do as long as everything was received OK.

So, turns out the guy actually did have a tracking number. I just arrived tonight and after opening the package, this is the message I sent them. ”

”I just received a clock back that is completely busted. This is not what we sent you. You can see the clock working in the video on the original listing. Or at least not in the same condition. It has clearly been tampered with. The back was ripped off and the wires torn of their connections, etc..”

So I had already given eBay a heads up about this situation on Facebook messenger. I just updated them and I kinda want to see what they say and what the customer comes back with. I might refund them minus my original shipping and cost of the item. I have hardly ever have a problem on eBay. I have sold on and off for years and now sell about 1-5 items a day. There is only one other time I can think of that comes close to this. So although it’s a drag, eBay has been pretty great overall.-

Did the buyer open an official return case through eBay?
If a buyer returned a broken item without opening up a return case or explanation, I’d think hard about ignoring them.

Ya, for sure. You are right about that. I’ll let everyone know what I end up doing.

So as nicely as I could I reminded the buyer, 1. you never opened a case, 2. you only messaged me days after sending a non-approved return and 3, this item is way more damaged than you stated. He could tell I was not just going to refund him 100%, so he opened a return case. I accepted the return and after talking to ebay about what to do, I gave him 50% back, not including original shipping. I believe 50% is the lowest % you can give back in this situation. I confirmed with Ebay that I am now out of the loop and that any further dispute would be between the buyer and ebay and no more $ would come out of my account. The next day he opens a dispute with ebay and then eBay pretty quickly ended the case with this result below. So I think he got close to 100% of his money back between ebay and I, except for the unauthorized shipping back to me. I sent pics and a video of the damage to ebay so they could really see the visual evidence. So I would say I’m satisfied I did not have pay back more than about $17.
