Hey Guys,
My name is Mo and I’ve been a reseller, scavenger, etc for years and years now. I recently (well 2 years ago) moved up from the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California to the greater Sacramento area. I guess it still feels new because we’ve spent most of the last year stuck in our house!
I’ve been listening to Ryanne & Jay’s podcast pretty much since it started so thank you to both of you for having a show that’s still going after all these years!
Primarily I sell on eBay & Amazon with a little bit of local stuff. I’ve made multiple switches from only eBay to only Amazon FBA now I’m about 80% eBay, 15% Amazon and the rest a mix of local, FB Marketplace, Poshmark, Mercari, Bonanza & etsy. Currently I have just under 1800 active listings on eBay and around 5oo on Amazon mixed between FBA and Merchant Fulfilled.
Another shift I’ve made this year is to selling items that I actually enjoy looking at. I still have items that I buy in bulk that move fast and don’t interest me, but that’s only about 20% of what I sell. I primarily sell used & vintage clothing, action figures, toys, games and video games now.
Not sure why I never registered here earlier, I’ve been lurking for years!
Cheers, Mo

Hi Mo – Welcome to the forums. It’s good to have another Northern Calfornian here. I wonder if our paths ever crossed when you were in the Bay Area.
Thanks for popping in to say hi.

Hi Simon,
I left the Bay Area in the summer of 2018 but I visit still once every month or so. I used to frequent most of the thrift stores in the east & South Bay.

Welcome! What made you switch from Amazon FBA to mostly eBay? I assume if the money was good, it’d be worth the hassle?

Hi Jay,
I’ve technically been on eBay since ‘98 so it kind of feels like home. In 2013-2014 Amazon was begging people to sign up for FBA so I signed up because I got a free month. Amazon used to even post amateur reseller YouTube videos right on the front of the FBA homepage. So I thought, why not. Back then it was really easy, not many restrictions and good customer service. By 2016 that all changed. I went from having 4000 FBA items to a few hundred in less than a year because I was scared of getting my account restricted. The uncertainty is why I don’t trust Amazon to have my back if a brand comes after me. People will say that that can happen on eBay but the fact is that I’ve never had one brand restrict me yet on eBay. I still sell on Amazon, but I’m very careful now and I try not to take any risks. I believe that Amazon will eliminate everyone that isn’t wholesaling and or private labeling once they can, in every category. It’s just a matter of time. Because eBay doesn’t compete with its own users like Amazon does I don’t see the same issue arising.

Got it. I dont follow all those FBA youtubers anymore that were popular around that time preaching retail arbitrage.
Have they all stopped posting videos about how great FBA is? Or is it all about Private Label and Wholesale now?

Lol. They are still there talking about wholesale and Private Label. A lot of them go back and forth now with pretty much every platform. Most of the FBA specific “Guru’s” make these terrible ads on YouTube now. They usually start with something like “if you give me 2 mins I’ll show you… blah blah blah, sign up for my free course…”
