I listed two General Motors security badges and eBay removed the listings after 2 weeks of them being active. Their reason for removing the listings was:
“You listed a badge that resembles a current issue law enforcement badge. We understand that there may be subtle differences in the features of the badge, but most people would not necessarily identify those differences if approached by someone that otherwise looks like an officer.”
However, I looked at the police related items policy prior to listing them and saw no issues. The policy says this:
The following items can’t be listed for sale on eBay:
- Law enforcement and other government-issued uniforms, badges, or accessories, such as hats, jackets, and shirts, or replicas of these items
- Official emergency lighting systems or sirens, including lenses or LEDs for these systems
The page says nothing about issues with items resembling a badge. The badges that I had listed said General Motors on them and “Security”. They did not say police, but were shaped like a badge. I have no intentions of relisting the items, but it is the principal and that this now counts as a strike on my account, which won’t fall off for 6 months.
I have tried eBay chat 4 times now and they are no help. Should I continue to try and fight this or just move on?
Thanks for the advice!

It might depend on whether you’re otherwise on thin ice for multiple removals. Though I have had the occasional removal once or twice a year I’ve always just let them go. My most recent one was just this week, and like yours, my item did not match the prohibition. (It was a CPAP expendable non-prescription resupply item removed as a “prescription device.”) The notification email specifically that no policy violation was recorded on my account as a result, though. Very frustrating but I have no doubt that fighting it will only be more so.
If you decide to take it further, please let us know how it went.

Fortunately, this is my first removal in a couple of years. I try to stay on top of policies and VeROs, because I never want to get to a place where I am on thin ice. I have spoken to 5 reps and they are not budging at all on their decision. So I think I just have to move forward and continue to be cautious.

A friend recently had a listing removed- it was for a copy of “My Struggle” by The Leader, just when the auction had reached 70 quid. The explanation was that it was an edition without a critical commentary, unlike all the rest of the listings for the same book (including a modern translation in Punjabi- I bet eBay checked that for a critical commentary /sarcasm). Three-day suspension (but they had been warned previously for selling a replica wound badge without blurring out the hakenkreuz- they found the badge in a car park).
Two takeaways- 1: a seven-day auction for the book got 300 views and 70 watchers (sad) – 2: if you’re selling certain things you gotta tweak the listing and photos carefully and make sure you don’t have Germany as one of the places you post to. They don’t want it back, thanks.

I sell some law enforcement stuff. I think you probably should let it go because badges are one thing they don’t mess around with. The closest thing you are allowed to sell are lapel pins that look like mini badges (like 1″) or old west style reproductions. I have noticed some sellers of law enforcement stuff put a note in their description that it is not a law enforcement item but a toy or souvenir.

I’d be really cautious about re-listing no matter what an ebay rep might tell you. Relisting items that have been taken down is the quickest way to a suspension from what I’ve seen on online forums.
