Came across a problem with the new eBay International shipping option. I use Shipsaver to insure my packages when they have values greater than $100. When I went to do this yesterday with a package going to Finland, Shipsaver gave me a error message stating that they didn’t support insurance for the shipper. eBay Ship only insures for $100. I’ve never had a problem with insuring packages shipped via GSP. Anyone else experienced this, and more pertinent, found a viable work-a-round? I know I can purchase additional insurance via eBay, but it is significantly more costly. I’ve reached out to Shipsaver for clarification and will update post with what I hear.
Glad I packed this one extra carefully, and double boxed, which I usually don’t do. If I’d known in advance I would have just purchased the eBay insurance. Extra nervous as this was a rare consignment piece.
Best, Mike

Hmmm that’s not good. There was just a thread here recently about a seller having to pay more for that shipping method than was charged the buyer. It may be the wave of the future but this is another reason I’m happy to stick with First Class Mail International for the time being. I did have issues with two FCMI different shipments with issues in March-April (to Poland and Italy that resolved themselves) but everything has been fine since then.
Please do let us know what Shipsaver says. Knock on wood your package should be fine; I’ve always found it to be a low drama shipping destination.

@Temudgin – Thanks for the input. Interestingly, I just started offering direct shipping via FCMI to give buyers more flexibility when eBay came out with their new method. It undercuts FCMI by a few dollars, so I’ve been offering it as an option.
I’m curious how you’re handling labels for that. I’m using Pirate Ship when I have FMCI eligible packages as it saves a few more dollars and have been considering reconfiguring my shipping policies to pass some of the savings on to my customers in hopes it makes me more competitive. Have you done anything like that, or are you just using the rates eBay provides?

Just got a reply from ShipSaver regarding my query:
Hello,
Our underwriter (ShipSurnace) is not currently offering coverage for eBay International Shipping which is why you are getting that message. Unfortunately we do not yet have a date of when they plan to start accepting coverage on those shipments.

Thanks for update on ShipSaver’s reply. I have occasionally checked Pirate Ship’s prices when I was ready to ship but I found that they were exactly the same as eBay’s, so I just used eBay’s label. I should probably continue to spot check, though. Perhaps the destination country makes a difference.

@Temudgin – There is a trick to using Pirate Ship. They have a simple export rate that for some reason they will only make available to you if you send them a chat request. Without the request, the rates are more expensive than eBay. Their prices seem to be only better for International first class packages under 4 lb. and 1 cubic foot. Screen shot of prices below.

I have not done that – I now recall seeing it on SL and had forgot about it. I need to do it. I just sent a 2 lb box to Israel that would have been $5 less to ship! Thanks for the reminder!
