Was wondering if any one here has had their taxes ever done by H&R Block? Also, if you have, were you happy with their work? I’ve used Jackson Hewitt 1x and had the IRS send me a letter telling me that I actually had an adjustment to my advantage. Never went back to them (long story) but was glad I had more money coming back-but not much-but I’ll take it!

Depends on how complicated your taxes are and how organized you are. We’ve always avoided them because they just hire seasonal help. If you have simple taxes, I’d just do it myself or use Turbo Tax.
Any reason why you can’t find a local tax accountant? They charge by the hour and can get to know your taxes to do them year after year. We have having another set of eyes on our numbers to make sure it’s all kosher.
Taxes were due July 15 🙂

Lol. Yes, Jay…I know taxes were due July 15 😀 I was just asking because I did my through hr block this year and was expecting to pay all this money, and surprise, surprise, I did not have to. So, I guess I’m just kinda wondering how good they are. The person I worked with was very nice and she was a Senior Tax Analyst, but titles mean nothing if you don’t really know what you’re doing. I felt comfortable with her and she seemed knowledgeable. I was just wondering if other folks had the same experience I did.
I used to have someone who did my taxes back in the day for many years, however, she was already up there in age and I started noticing she was doing goofy things, so I stopped going to her. By goofy, I mean, she misplaced alllllll of my w-2’s and other papers I gave here. With no apology whatsoever, she called me and told me this and then acted like it was no big deal. Adding insult to injury, she charged me more that year. Â I was done after that.
But I, like you, just want to make sure everything is legit, and kosher when I do my taxes.

Weighing in as a tax professional, I have seen some truly awful returns prepared by H&R Block. And I’ve seen some that were well-prepared. Just depends on how competent and experienced the person you’re working with is. Senior Tax Analyst is apparently the 5th highest of the 6 H&R Block job titles, according to their website. I don’t know what you have to do to achieve that, but presumably it involves a bit of experience. If you felt good about the job she did, and your taxes aren’t all that complicated (from a professional standpoint), my guess is you’re likely fine.

Well-said. The issue with those big tax preparer companies is you don’t know who you’ll get. Hopefully that person was a pro.
That’s the good thing about finding a local tax accountant who can do your taxes year after year. The relationship. (see last podcast about how we value our relationships these days 🙂

My taxes were not simple. No 1040 EZ here . I had a schedule C, deductions, donations, among other various paperwork involved. Hence, why I did not do them myself. The preparer told me that it would have cost me $500., but I must have gone in there looking disheveled or something because she and everyone there was really nice and we even spoke on a few occasions where she told me about her daughter, how she graduated from college, etc. I felt like I knew her. That aside, she charged me less than half of that-even with all my taxes entailed. Wow. I was not going to complain. At all. I asked her how long she had been doing taxes, she told me since 1981. Â Also, this office is open year round, which very few are.
Jay, I listen to every SL podcast and wait each week like a cat waits for cat-nip. I only have a few podcasts that I look for each week and SL is the top one. If the others stopped podcasting, well, there goes that, but if you and Ryanne stopped podcasting, well. I would lost. NO pressure though. Haha! Â I know I don’t comment on the podcasts, but please know that I truly appreciate all you and Ryanne do. Even more so when you two laugh. Pricele$$.
