In the last 30 days, 7 different buyers have purchased an item, and in the note attached to the purchase said “No shipping, please!” or “refund shipping cost!” I don’t offer free shipping, and obviously if you want to negotiate a refund for shipping costs, the time to do that is BEFORE you place the order. These aren’t super-expensive items, either, so “free” shipping would cut into the smaller profit margin I get from those items. I’m not sure what is causing this, as I never saw this before. Maybe eBay’s push to provide free shipping has generated a sense of entitlement, or this is part of some power-play negotiation tactic they saw in a YouTube video or something.
I decline to do so, and offer them the chance to cancel the order – although if they don’t respond within the time I need to ship, it could screw up my metrics. When that has happened, I have shipped and told them I didn’t receive their message in time, and that we always charge shipping. No one has canceled yet and no problems so far, except for one angry buyer who f-bombed me and got blocked; I would hope if someone gave me neg feedback in this situation that eBay would have my back.
Is anyone else seeing this?

We havent seen an uptick of this behavior, but we have had the same kind of buyers furious they must pay for shipping. I think its the “amazon effect” where buyers think free shipping is normal.
Obviously Amazon sellers can offer free shipping because they work that cost into their price. Nothing is ever free 🙂

I haven’t seen this behavior. But I tend to agree with Jay, I think we are getting some buyers who have been buying on Amazon and other sites where free shipping may be the norm.

ah, i see what you guys are saying. since lots of things are not in stock (or they are and are shipping VERY slowly) on Amazon, people are moving over to ebay more than normal. yep, i bet that has a lot to do with it. so happy to be able to shop on ebay right now, where you can message a seller directly to make sure they’re shipping as fast as they say they are.

Experiencing pretty much the opposite here – not only is no one complaining about shipping charge, but they are paying more than ever. Most of my sales are for items less than $30, in many cases the shipping charge has been nearly equal to or in some cases higher than the actual price of the item. ( Example -an old suitcase sells for 30 bucks and the buyer pays nearly 40 to have a delivered across the country. And honestly, who is planning a trip?)
Have even had Buyers offer to pay more for a quick shipment.
It’s true!
Plus, for the first time in maybe forever, buyers are selecting FedEx Ground because it’s cheaper. I’ve had that option on most listings for years and in the past two weeks people are making the choice. do they have More time to ACTUALLY READ THE DESCRIPTION? hmmmmmm. So far so good.

I am happy to offer free shipping to Amazon customers who are willing to pay me $99.00 a year for the privilege.
