Read several articles regarding The effect of Covid 19 on the USPS. The Post Master General has requested bailout from Congress. They estimate losses of 13 Billion so far and up to 22 Billion if lockdown continues.

However, even more worrying, the Washington Post has an article staying that the White House will refuse any bailout that includes the USPS:

like most news or any decision, any outcome would be politically motivated. Here’s hoping that it will be a sensible one.

Its kind of interesting that the “other” carriers like Fedex, UPS, etc are booming during the covid-19 shelter in place, including smaller regional delivery companies, but USPS is getting gut punched so hard by this. Seems to me it is because the USPS gave up on competitive pricing on larger packages quite some time ago. It shows that the USPS is wired differently at this point.

I don’t think it will be the end of USPS but it irritates me that we even have to worry about that right now when so much of our daily lives have been upended. There is a postal clause in the US Constitution, which gives Congress various authorities when it comes to decisions around the postal system. Hopefully its enough power that they can keep it open without interference from other branches of gov’t.

This would be amazing if we privatize the USPS!
We can eliminate ANOTHER good paying union job and replace it with part-time employees with no health or other benefits at minimum wage! This would be an amazing corporate money grab! Then the middle class can pay $20 to mail a letter! Everyone wins!
Next we can erode public education and libraries even further!
American capitalism! Privatize the gains… Socialize the losses.

From what I am understanding, USPS has sufficient funds to last until September. That said, millions of stimulous checks start being sent in May, which will definitely help.
Amazon are using USPS to send goods that are far flung and expensive to reach. Michigan Upper Peninsular, Alaska, to name a few. If USPS were smart, they would up their prices to organizations that outsource to them.
Hopefully, they will also manage to obtain much needed stimulous money.
On a flipping note…. Might be worth looking at other shipping services like Pirate Ship as a contingency plan.

Casual observations:
In the past week I’ve had first class packages go across the country in a day or two. So from here Postal service seems normal.
Local post office has some distancing rules in effect and jury rigged protections for workers, everyone in good spirits.
eBayers keeping them busy, sales seem good.
Customers generally masked and respecting the tape lines on the floor.
Big sanitizer dispenser, have a pump.
At home, advertising junk mail is WAY down. This stuff has always been mentioned as a burden to profitability. Will it return?
Heard about a movement encouraging people to buy stamps since that can help the bottom line. Have actually been getting cards and letters from friends and relatives. Seems like a great thing to do on many levels, especially if it might help the PO.
Sales are up, haven’t encountered any mailing issues, largely ignoring the perditions and predictions which are shooting out of everywhere like a fire hose, few of which are absolute.
One friend just lost his father ( not virus related ) and another friend lost his aunt ( virus related ).
That’s now and that hurts.
Wonder if Kevin Costner’s the Postman is streamable – got a kick out of Tom Petty in that and though I haven’t seen it in years, might be a fun watch!
