My Samsung Android is 7 or 8 years old. I have had the eBay app from the beginning. Every once in a while, the ka-ching noises stop coming. (I have a large active store on eBay.) Whenever that happened in the past, I deleted the app, re-loaded it and that solved the problem. When this happened last week, I got the message that my phone would not support the eBay app so I cannot re-load it. Obviously, they have done an update since the last time I did this.
I know the phone is old but I barely use it as it is and there’s no way I can justify $800+ for a new one. This phone does everything else I need. My life certainly won’t come to a screeching halt without the eBay app but it does make me wonder if this update deters potential new buyers?
Anybody else with an older phone experience this?

What version of Android do you run?

You might be able to update the Android version if that’s the problem. And then install the new ebay app.

Android Version 4.4.4. The message I get when trying to install the app is “Your device isn’t compatible with this version.”

We ise iPhones, but I’d be surprised if you couldnt buy a used, but newer, Android for $100.
We always stay about four generations behind on the iPhone for about $135 free shipping. They’re several years old, but still up to date.
8-9 years is pretty old for any phone or computer these days.

I did try to upgrade the software but it said no upgrades were available and told me to try again in 24 hours. I know you’re right about keeping a newer phone; I just have so little use for a cell phone in general that it’s hard to spend any money on a newer one. Thank you for the advice!

We have an old iPhone that our helper uses. It’s not connected to the cell towers with a monthly bill. Its just connected to the internet so she can take photos and upload them through the eBay app.
Its just a tool we need for our business.

Try upgrading your phone to Android 5.0.1 or higher. I don’t think it’s the phone itself that’s the problem, it’s the version of Android you are using. (Unfortunately, your phone might not be able to upgrade to 5…..I don’t know. I have a pretty old phone, and I could upgrade to 5 but no higher (I think at this point the latest version of Android is around 12….) But if you get to 5, I think the ebay app will work OK.

After I saw your message above, I did try to upgrade the software but wasn’t successful. Apparently, they only allow you to try every 24 hours so I’ll try again tomorrow. As usual, I learn a lot from this forum! Thanks so much.

In light of the previous discussion, what is your preferred source for late model (but not the latest) phones? I know they are available everywhere but with my limited technical ability, a trusted source would be important.

Someone who knows Android phones could hopefully link to a used newer phone for $100 or less.
We’re on the iPhone 7 which was made in 2016. It’s plenty fast and does everything for about $135: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=iphone+7&_sacat=0&_udhi=150

I use an iPhone 6 in the same way that Jay describes – just for pictures and eBay, connected to wifi only, no cell service. I don’t think the 6 is supported any longer by Apple, but the 6S and newer will still update.

I’ve heard good things about the Motorola Moto G6. It’s around $100.
One thing to consider: Make sure any phone you look at can make calls over 4G LTE, as regular 4G will no longer support calls in the near future.
