So I sold a piece of pottery in January. Buyer got it and opened a refund saying not as described for color (despite the color in listing and pictures clearly showing the color). They even admitted in the return that they didn’t see the color description in the listing until they started the return. Whatever. I accept the return. I get the item back. It is in fine shape so I refund. It gives me the option to refund the purchase price and then there is a toggle for me to select the original shipping if I want. I don’t of course. Says refund processed. I know the buyer could appeal and ask for their original shipping, but I think I’m done and assume the item will be automatically relisted.
A few days later in my Seller Hub I notice I have a pending return still, I click on it and it is for this pottery. The reason is “Waiting for buyer to confirm refund received.” I wonder if they are appealing the refund, but I see nothing to that effect, nor anything on the PayPal end. Every couple days I check in and see it is still pending. I’m getting annoyed because I’d like to relist my item and move on.
So today, 10 days later I call ebay. They say “oh I see you gave a partial refund”. I say “well I refunded the entire cost of the item”. Then they say, “yes your buyer hasn’t accepted the item as soon as they do it will close and the item will relist”. So I ask “how many days do they have to accept the refund?” “21 days and then it is closed automatically” they say and I presume I get my money back? Very weird that they aren’t accepting it and have also not appealed. Well I have 10 more days to wait and see what happens.
Anyone else ever have a refund “expire” like this? Did you get your money back (and the item) for them not ever accepting the refund?

Yes, it happened to me. I refunded all but the original shipping. Got the same message. In my case, ebay told me the buyer had so many days to request the balance, and then it would be between ebay and the buyer. Basically, I was done. As far as I know, my buyer never “confirmed”, the time limit expired, end of story. At least in my situation, it sounded like even if the buyer wanted the original shipping, ebay would decide whether or not the buyer would get it, and if so, it would come out of ebay’s pocket.
But no, you don’t get your refund back. This is only about whether they want to argue about the balance or not. It’s poorly worded. What it really means is: If you return the entire amount (including original shipping), there’s no waiting period. If you return less than that, the buyer has so many days in which to request the balance. If he doesn’t, that’s the end of it.

Ah, you are right, that is worded strangely. That’s fine that I don’t get the money (since I do have the item) I just wanted to relist as fast as possible. Oh well, I guess I will wait and see it resolve in 10 days.

Same thing just happened to me as well just recently. There was no way I was going to contact the buyer to get them to “accept the refund” so the return would close b/c I did not want to alert them to the fact that their refund didn’t include original shipping, in case they hadn’t noticed and might care. So I waited and waited and finally called ebay and learned about the 21 day thing, and the return automatically closed out a few days later.
Note: depending on the reason selected for the return, you may or may not have been charged for return shipping.

I’ve never seen the original shipping checkbox on an INAD case.
It’s always there on a standard return.-

Just double-checked, the reason for the return was listed as: Doesn’t match description or photos.
When I processed the return, it I did it on my phone and it had a toggle switch (which was off) that said refund original shipping and I didn’t select it.-

Yes, that’s fairly new (quietly released) behavior – I’ve been seeing it the last few months or so. Didn’t used to be that way for not as described returns, particularly if you don’t offer free returns, which I don’t.

Personally, I don’t see any reason to wait for the 21-day waiting period to end because no matter what happens you are still going to have the item and want to sell it. If you create a new listing now you just need to watch for it to be automatically relisting and cancel that listing if it happens to prevent a duplicate listing.
