Hi guys. I listed a new in box vcr on eBay a few days ago. It sold in like 15 minutes. We were so happy. My husband said, I hope this guy isn’t scamming us, his name is William f. King (bill f*king). The guy has over a thousand good reviews over the course of a year, so I told him surely it must be okay. Well bill f. king got the vcr and says it’s not new. I know that it was in fact new, but I listen to this podcast enough to know to just accept the return knowing that I’m probably going to get back some broke hunk of junk. The thing that’s bothering me is that I discovered that his feedback is hidden and his address is the post office. You can’t hide seller feedback right? so he’s only a buyer? I’m wondering if besides sending me a hunk of junk broke vcr or an empty box, is there a way that he can send nothing back and still somehow get his/my money back and if so is there any way for me to avoid it? Nothing to get you in the holiday mood like a good old fashioned scam … bah humbug . Thanks for your reply.

Well, that does sound suspicious, but you’ll have to wait to get back your package before you know for sure that you’ve been scammed.
If you get back a different (mostly likely nonworking) VCR, you will have to call eBay and lay out the issue. If this is something he’s done before, and they have the record from other sellers, there is a possibility of coming out OK. Just make sure not to be too emotional when you call and lay out the facts.
If he doesn’t have a history of scamming sellers, then I’m not sure there is much you can do.
If he actually sends back an empty box, I wonder if you would be able to get the weight of the box as you sent it and the weight sent back. I know the post office takes those measurements, but I’m not sure you can get that information quickly.
Some people say to make sure to have the serial number in the photos so that you can show a comparison of what you get back, but I’m not sure that will help.

Don’t know if you can do this, but as I have a rural post office and am on first-name basis with all of them, I can and do. When I have a high-ticket return, I print a copy of the return slip and the listing photos (one or more, depending on the importance of the information in the photo and take it with me to the post office. I open the return in front of them and, if it is not as described, I have a postal worker witness, and I immediately file a claim for mail fraud. Then I, take photos, write what was actually received on the return slip, get the postie to sign as witness, and trot around the corner to the Sheriff’s office and file charges. (We have a Sheriff, not a police station, in our tiny town.) Then the case number, a copy of the documents and the photos are all emailed to eBay. It’s very hard for them to argue that case. Bit of a shock for the buyer when I email them that information too.

1. I always have a photo of the serial number in the photos, the serial number added to item specifics, and the serial number mentioned in the description.2. I have the following blurb added to the description. Feel free to use/amend as you wish:

@amatino that is brilliant! We are totally going to use that blurb, thank you for the info! I live in a suburb, where the post office people don’t want to work and let everyone know it, but if I find someone nice I will try that as well
