I just accepted a $150 offer for a DVD/VCR player, but when I checked my PayPal account it shows that eBay has put a hold on the funds (about $200 with shipping, minus taxes and fees) but neither PayPal, nor eBay gave a specific reason, just a list of possible reasons. I have been selling since early November and I have sold about 25 items so far for a total of about $730 (including the DVD/VCR player) with no delivery problems or returns. eBay says the funds will be available by Jan. 4. It says I’ll get paid within 24 hours after the item is delivered, if I use eBay labels (which I do). I got the money right away for all other transactions. Should I just contact eBay and ask what’s up and ask if there’s a way to get the money sooner? Or is this routine for a newbie’s first big sale? Could this be something the buyer has requested? Has anybody else had this happen? Should I be concerned about shipping without having the money released, or is it safe because PayPal has the money and is just waiting until it’s delivered?

From PayPal community forums:
“Payment holds occur because:
You have been selling on eBay for less than 90 days
You have an eBay feedback score fewer than 100 and have not yet established a record of good performance
You have received fewer than 20 Detatiled Seller Ratings on eBay in the last 12 months or your eBay seller performance is below standard
You have a high rate of customer disputes or a low eBay feedback percentage
You have been a PayPal member for less than 6 months and have limited selling activity
You have a sudden change in selling activities (e.g. suddenly selling expensive items, selling large numbers of items, etc.)
You happen to be selling in a high risk category such as tickets, travel, gift vouchers, computers, electronics, mobile phones, etc.”So yes, it’s because you’re new and selling in a category eBay/PayPal deems to be risky.
Back when I joined, you couldn’t sell more than like 5 items in electronics for the first 90 days of being on eBay.

This is the answer. You say youve sold 25 items successfully, but you’ve only sold for about a month.
You should call if you’re worried, but they’ve said the funds will be released if shipped successfully.

Don’t be too nervous. We have all been there but don’t make yourself sick over it.
It is just as Jay and IndySales state. All those factors come into play.
Something to remember, there is several places where J and R have said, we all started somewhere, we all had zero feedback, we all had a first Sale, we all had a first return at some point starting online Sales.
Buddy, just settle in, you have a lot of firsts to experience and some will test your grit and metal. But though SL is much smaller than a place like Reddit [Jay’s local hangout place], here you will get a lot of help from others that have been there done that and don’t mind sharing.
Jay calls my posts, which number up and over 750 ++ I think, “Walls of Text” because being Southern, I write the way I talk, and that is a lot. But many others have great posts on here and stick with J and R and you will learn.
Also learn to Search the Old Blog and the new forum. If you have a question, problem or issue try that first because at some point in time we have all probably written about it, maybe even several times.
Use “Control and the F Key and a Pop will appear down below and then type in your search term. You can even ask for the finds to be highlighted so you can see the matches better. Or, also use J and R’s search bar.
In any case you will get a lot of help here and without much grief. Just be open and honest with all of us and we will respond in like kind to you.

Thanks MDC I am grateful to have this resource and the podcast which I have been listening to daily for a couple months now. You’re especially right about the stress of experiencing all those firsts. But I’m having a lot of fun. I don’t consider this a business yet, but a hobby that I actually make money from instead of one that most people have that can be a money pit.
