Our local Goodwill changes their 50 pct off color each Sunday. We went there today right at opening time and I headed towards the books as I am often wont to do.
As I approached there was an employee there with a cart. I thought that she was putting out new books but she was pulling books from the shelf. I looked closely and saw that every book she was pulling had a blue sticker which was in fact this weeks new 50 pct off color. I asked her “what is happening to these books?” She replied, “Oh they are just dirty and need cleaning.”
My wife and I both have been suspicious that there always seemed to be so few of the current week’s colored items. Now I am more than a bit convinced that they DO hide items from the current discount color. I didn’t see the manager today so I didn’t bother asking anyone if I could go in the back and look through all the blue stickered items.

Goodwills are regionally run like franchises. Even store to store, management seem to run the stores as they see fit.
The store has then right to remove items from the floor, but it is bad business.

Yeah, it just seems almost “bait and switchy” to me.

If they are taking out items that are on sale, then its exactly “bait and switch”.

I think my goodwill does something similar. Often I will see a different colored price sticker underneath to top one.
At least you still have 1/2 off colors. Ours changed this year to 40% off. So jealous of the areas that have $1 days, like LA.

why have a sale if you pull all the items on sale to the back? is it just a marketing tactic? i’m guess that’s why. seems crazy since it would be the same people shopping there frequently and, like you, would notice that nothing is really on sale.

Our GWs never put half-price stickers on anything other than clothes and some kinds of hard goods. Electronics are never on markdown.
Some GWs are just run by total weirdos with very little experience in reselling. One time a manager scolded me for testing electronics and said I was using the “wrong power outlet.” Another time they’d affixed $100 price tags on anything that played media. The last time I visited there were eBay search results taped to an item, except the printout said “No results found”, and the prices they’d highlighted were for completely different items. The item also looked like it had been taken out back and had 12 shotgun rounds unloaded into it. It’s just so funny how far off these people are.
It’s not like they’re under the watch of some higher-up telling them to push more profits – every single store I visit is under the same regional umbrella, and they’re all wildly different in their approach. Some are just greedier than others.

My Goodwills also put a color of the week at 50% off starting every Sunday. However, they also start pulling that particular color from the shelves & racks starting on that same day. They continue to pull that color all week long until all are removed. They then sell those in very large bundles or they send them to a Goodwill Outlet. They simply have too many items to wait until the last day of the week to start removing the 50% merchandise from their shelves so they work on it a little bit all week long.
