@always-a-trade-off-u-kHi from the U.K.
I found this book recently in a charity shop (thrift shop), I can’t find it anywhere on line – Bookfinder, Abebooks etc. Only reprints are listed. What do you think ? I appreciate that something is only valueable if people only want it !

I recently sold a book that was a reprint on a similar subject (but not the same book as what you have). I sold it for $17 with included shipping.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/183266506055I think any book made before 1900 is valuable, and the subject is definitely of interest to someone in the Chinese community or to a student or professor of the language or maybe just a collector.
I can’t answer exactly how valuable, but it definitely isn’t trash. Perhaps send the photos to something like Abebooks and ask if they want to buy it from you and how much. Whatever they answer, multiply that number by 2 or 3 or more and add make offer.

Not all books printed before 1900 are valuable, but this one is.
Abebooks is a bookselling site with a variety of different booksellers on it. It is currently owned by Amazon, but they didn’t create the site.

Not a rare book, but hard to find. 1 copy found in a library in France. I was not able to locate a copy of the 1882 edition for sale, but I did find an Asian specialist bookseller that had a different book by the same author and time period for sale for $270, also with a chart.
I would not aim that high, but I would go reasonably high with it due to the condition and how minty the chart appears. Will most likely be a long-tail item. It took me 4 years to sell a Cantonese dictionary from the early 1900s, but it wasn’t on Ebay.

Book dealer here. This book has been recently reprinted. The new reprints are selling from $18 to $40. I couldn’t find any original copies like you have listed for sale. I’d price it at $100 and see how it does.

The thrift shop I volunteer at has just this week re-opened as a bookshop. The manager’s instructed us to use a site called Bookbutler to price books. The site seems to me to be a bit clunky.
One example: a book turns up in one of the sacks- 1880s about Korean Christianity. I check up online and find one copy for sale at £380 so I left a note about this. Someone else prices it up at £100 and puts it on display in a cabinet. Now as far as I can see the bookseller pulled their “£380” price out of their nether regions- the book falls into that category of Victorian religious personal stories which ain’t worth nothing. However an elderly gentleman did last week purchase the book- did he think it was very underpriced having checked it online?

I’d probably run an auction, starting at 99.99….
