Just an FYI: While ebay has said that most everyone will be in MPs by 2021, joining MP has been entirely voluntary…until now. Ebay has begun the actual roll out, with sellers getting notices to sign up by a certain date or risk interruption to their account. This will be gradual, because ebay is under a restriction per the ebay-PP agreement, but it is no longer entirely voluntary. So, if you get a MP invitation from eBay….read it carefully…it may be less an invitation and more of an order LOL
This is an ebay response to a question on the Power Seller Board:
“I do want to clarify that when we have stated in the past that we plan to have almost all of our sellers in managed payments by 2021, this should not be interpreted as “we will be adding everyone right before 2021″. Sellers will be progressively moved to managed payments between now and then. The recent notice to eligible sellers that we will be moving them to managed payments is not a change to our timeline, simply the next step on our way to meeting our goal.”

MyCottage – Did you also get this email (as described in the thread), or are you just following the discussion?
The reason I ask is that the email from the thread had the following wording “Based on our review of your account, the features and tools you use on eBay are fully compatible with managed payments.”.
So, I have the Global Shipping Program option on almost all my listings. The GSP is NOT compatible with Managed Payments right now, so I shouldn’t get that email until it is.
Personally, I don’t mind MPs as long as I have all the benefits (like GSP) that I have now. The rest should be improvements from just PayPal. I haven’t read anything about fee increases or higher costs. The big difference will be the payments every day into a checking or savings account.

I did not get the email. I got an invitation (I don’t use GSP), but it did not include any date by which I should sign up. I think you are probably correct about the GSP factor.

In that forum thread people are talking about moving everything to variation listings to escape fee increases. What’s that about?

“Separating payment from buying is an interesting trend and I would like to see more of that in more places.” (CEO Pieter van de Does, Adyen)
I read the rest of the article , but for the life of me I don’t understand it. Something about a Dutch unicorn…

Apologies if I missed any of discussions on this but I don’t understand why managed payments are better if customers don’t have PayPal. As far as I know, customers don’t need a PayPal account to buy something now, they can check out as a guest and use whatever credit or debit card they want. I’m fairly certain they could even use Venmo or any other digital payment system or even send PP a check. Someone please let me know if I am wrong! Thanks , Elizabeth

Elizabeth, Not sure I understand your question. If a seller is NOT in MP, then the buyer must buy with PP. Period. If the seller is in MP, the buyer can use PP, Apple Pay, credit card, and some other designated payment methods.

MyCottage – I think Elizabeth is differentiating between 2 scenarios that can happen without MP:
1) you have a paypal account and buy with paypal – the standard way
2) you don’t have a paypal account, and you can still purchase via paypal as a “guest” by entering your credit card number. So if you can purchase with a CC without a paypal account now (albeit VIA PayPal), what benefit is Managed Payment providing?
Elizabeth,
I think the answer is that the benefit is if you have an account set up with non-PayPal payment providers like Apple or Google, and your credit card info is stored with them, so you don’t want to have to enter it again, and you also don’t want to open a PayPal account.
Now, if you don’t want to have any account with any payment provider but you use ebay all the time, the benefit is that you can store your credit card in the ebay MP system (but you probably have the option of entering each time if you want to).THat’s how I understand it anyway.

Thanks- I am talking about scenario #2.
Just as an extra thought, as a consumer I don’t like anyone having my CC number automatically “on my account”. The extra 30 seconds to enter my payment information is worth it for my piece of mind. I can’t tell you how many times my cards have been replaced by the bank because of suspected compromise. If you have ever been hacked, you would never leave a payment method “on account”. -

Actually rereading, without MP, a buyer does have to go through PayPal(an extra step) but they don’t have to make an account, they can checkout as a guest.
