Woke up this morning to an email from PayPal informing me of an opened case claiming an unauthorized sale. I’ve never been through this, but it’s weird because a) The person has had the item for a couple of weeks and left me positive feedback. b) On Paypal, the item is now a pending sale, but it says there are no open cases.
The Paypal email said, “At this time, we need no further action or information from you,” so I guess calling them will get me nowhere. I’m not freaked out, but a couple of questions are running through my mind at the moment. Is this “normal” for an unauthorized sale? If they accept the seller’s claim, will they have him send the item back and wait to refund until I confirm I received the item? Otherwise, it doesn’t seem like there’s any protection for the seller here.

Thanks Ryanne, I just called. Looks like the buyer told his credit card co. that he didn’t recognize the payment. The Paypal operator told me they will send the tracking number to the issuer as proof. He gave me the impression it would be resolved quickly and in my favor, but didn’t (couldn’t) say the latter. Hope to find out soon…

Just dealt with this exact situation this past Sat. Woke up buyer says did not authorize payment. Went to Paypal opened claim up loaded tracking number and sent some notes as to exact day sold, shipped, and day it arrived at customer’s CONFIRMED address. Had to wait until 9:00 A.M., but called Paypal service rep. looked at my documentation add it to some notes. She then closed the case on my side because I was able to provide tracking and address information. My funds were released right then and there. Always call and always try to up load the tracking information.

Having this same problem. Got the email from PayPal – We are writing to let you know one of your buyers opened a case for this transaction. The buyer stated that they did not authorize this purchase. And that they have the tracking # and no further information will be needed from me. I looked at my PayPal account and saw that this payment is being “held”, and that there is no case open. I called PayPal, they transferred me to an Ebay rep, they transferred me back to PayPal. I was told to send more information to the same email address, so I sent screenshots of the transaction on Ebay, only to receive an automated reply saying to resolve the issue under Resolutions on PayPal.
This all happened yesterday. I checked this morning and there is still no open case. So I’ve decided I’m going to wait to see what happens. I’ll keep you updated.

My case was resolved in my favor yesterday after about a week. No explanation. I still don’t know what happened.
For people coming to this late, I called paypal the same day I got the email notification stating the transaction was being contested as an unauthorized sale. They said they would notify the credit card company that the tracking was uploaded and had to wait to hear back from them. I guess the original sale went through the buyer’s credit card via paypal. The only thing I can think of is that the transaction might appear on the buyer’s credit card statement as just my paypal email address and they might have not connected what they bought with that address. I think I remember a fairly deeply buried setting in paypal that lets you put what address you want to show up on someone’s statement, but I was unable to find it just now doing a quick look.
