Heard about the British show “Grand Designs” in the S&B podcast. Watched a few on YouTube. Love it!
In one episode, the couple sold their house and moved into a trailer in order to build the wife’s childhood dream house in her grandparents’ farm. Ended up living in the trailer for almost 3 years, with two small kids! But the end result is so worth it!
My family is now also considering rebuild/remodel our house. Make it a 5-bedroom house with elevator (3 kids and grandma). It’s gonna be a painful process, but hopefully it will worth it.
Just ordered series 1&2 from UK Amazon ‘cause the YouTube video quality is so bad. The price of the DVD in US Amazon is so expensive. (Anyone of you have the DVD that you don’t need anymore?)

My husband and I watched these a year or so ago – there were a bunch on Netflix – not sure if they still are.
Honestly, it made never want to try to build a house! We did a gut remodel on our last house while living in it, and that was enough money and drama for us.
One of the most interesting things to me was seeing how irrational people would get when sunk costs and emotion were involved. Even the owners who came from careers where they should have known better were not immune. “We’ve already taken on so much debt to build our dream house, why not take on more debt.” There are a few episodes with more DIY people building unconventional homes – those were my favorite.
I will say the final products were always cool, and the host, Kevin McCloud, is great.

Awesome show, GD australia has some really nice home as well.
Some episodes are really funny, you hear the people say they want to do such and such and many 1000’s of square feet and their budget is like 100k, my wife and I just look at each other and laugh. -

glad you linked to this. we have been watching the series from the beginning and i always wonder what happened at several of them. some are just too good/bad to be true or sustainable.

Got season #1 and #2 DVDs from Amazon UK. Popped them into my DVD player and Blu-Ray player. Neither could play. Restricted by region code. Bummer!

It’ll play on an older Apple Mac, but you’re restricted as to the number of times you can change the region code. (that’s from maybe unreliable memory)
I was at the eye clinic a couple of days back, and had to sit through an entire episode of “Homes under the hammer”. One of the “homes” was a back-to-back house in Halifax.

I only watch Kirstie Allsop and Phil Spencer for my UK real estate shows, but the last few series has been 4+ episodes of follow-ups, and only 3-4 new people looking to buy – I don’t need to watch the same programme over again with a 1-2 minute update… C4 maybe needs to start a Millenial version of Location Location Location with younger hosts – the Australian version had some good younger hosts.
I’ll have to check out Grand Disasters though – just finished the new series of Selling Houses Australia and need some new real estate shows to watch instead of getting suckered into House Hunters…

Bought a multi-region DVD player off Kijiji for $25. It plays DVDs from any region. 😀
