I default on my listings to No Returns, but I almost always accept returns, and 100% of the time when I made a mistake. So I sold this pair of mens dress shoes that are clearly marked as 9EEE. Buyer received item and left me positive feedback. The next day they requested a return stating that the shoes didn’t fit – they seemed to be a bit too long and more like a 10. I accepted the return immediately, no problem. The next day, I get the following message:
If I understand right if an item isn’t right the seller is supposed to pay return shipping. These shoes were misrepresented. If they were yours you know they were marked wrong. If you are a dealer you can look at them and tell they are too long for a size 9. I need for you to pay the entire amount I paid including shipping. If you deny that I will work with ebay to get all the money..
So…I’m apparently supposed to be psychic and know exactly how a clearly marked size shoe is supposed to fit every customer. I got quite a laugh at this last message.
So I plan on calling ebay today to discuss it just to document things. I don’t intend to write the customer and plan to just let their return window run out and have the case closed. I do have two other potential paths and would like some feedback.
1. I could write the buyer a message such as this:
I am sorry that these shoes do not fit. Although I typically do not accept returns, I was happy to quickly approve your return request. As stated in the listing and shown in the pictures, the shoes are identified as Mens size 9EEE. Please return the shoes and I’ll be happy to refund the original sales price. Ebay policy states that the buyer is responsible for shipping in cases of fit. Another option you have is to list the shoes for sale – it should be a quick sale as these are nice shoes and you’ll likely get more than what you paid.2. I could write the customer and reinforce the ebay returns policy, but offer to split the cost of the return shipping 50/50. Maybe the customer will be happy to get a little something and I could be done with it.

i dont see a reason to write back. you accepted the return for reason ‘does not fit’ buyer has the obligation to return them on their own dime. if the don’t in 5 business days, you can close the case. no need to say anything to them.

I agree. I wouldn’t communicate with the buyer at this point, I’d call eBay and see how they would side with you. If its marked 9EEE, then I’m not sure what he can do.

I just received notification that the buyer shipped the shoes back. No additional message either. Ebay must have smacked them down. Lol.

There you go. Often times if you know how the eBay rules work, silence just allows the system to work.
Now they’ll get their refund, but they pay for shipping since it was buyer’s remorse. A fair outcome.

Got the shoes back. The buyer was so kind as to write me a personal note. They used lots of exclamation marks and also called me a crook. I feel like I’ve truly made it in the ebay world now! Lol!

Omg, this time of year brings out the worst in some people! I’ve had a lot of super picky, high maintenance buyers lately, all pointing out that “You know, it’s Christmas time…”, like any purchase agreement now implies I make their Christmas dreams come true. Gah.
