Hi all!
I’m very excited to have found this community of kindred spirits! I’ve been a part-time reseller for a year now. (By day, I work as a registered nurse.)
In my EBay store, I sell an eclectic mix of mostly preowned items I find at local thrift stores. I’ve also dabbled a little in retail arbitrage. I have about 190 items in my store at this time.
My brother has been an Ebay seller since 2003, and I have always been intrigued by his big score stories. I finally got brave enough to try it myself when I developed an interest in becoming more financially secure last year. Nearing age 50, I joked I would only be able to retire when I die. I was listening to one of Dave Ramsey’s podcasts during which he said to sell anything and everything of value around your house and throw that money at your debt. “Sell so much the dog thinks he’s next!”
It was my reasearch to learn about selling on EBay that led me to “Scavenger Life” podcast. I thank Jay and Ryanne for sharing their experiences and for the innumerate helpful tips. I still haven’t reached 500 listings, but it’s definitely a goal to reach and exceeed. Thank you for forming this community and for permitting me to participate.

Welcome Christine. A couple years ago, we had a small subset of nurses who were also running eBay businesses on the side.
That’s good advice to start selling everything in your house you dont use/need. Easiest money to make first.
What kind of items are you attracted to at thrift stores when you scavenge?

I’m somewhat new myself and the folks here have been awesome.I’m also a big fan of Dave Ramsey. I’m on baby steps 4 and 6 (no 5 since no kids college to worry about) and all my eBay profits are being thrown at my house. My goal is to have it paid off in 5 years.

Thank you for the welcome! While sourcing, I’m usually drawn to beautiful, interesting, and unique items. That can be in the form of quality apparel, housewares, art, crafts, etc. I usually don’t buy items I can’t test, or don’t have the proper knowledge of to accurately describe such as video games, car parts, electronics, tools etc.
Christian, good job on your progress in the Ramsey baby steps! Since starting to listen to his podcast and subsequently becoming an EBay seller, I no longer believe I am destined to live paycheck to paycheck. I’m in baby step 2 with only a $ 3500 “car fleece” left of my debt.

Welcome Christine! I’m in Pennsylvania too, though much further east. I find its a great state for sourcing. I would think the Pittsburgh area would be as good or even better than where I am. My advice is: just keep plugging away…and listening to the podcasts! J & R: Informative, Inspiring, and Entertaining!

Thank you M.C.! You’re correct, the Burgh is a great place for sourcing! There are 2 Goodwill outlets and several thrift stores nearby. I haven’t tried auctions yet, but my brother swears by the box lots J & R mention in SL podcast for profitable inventory with little capital. I definitely eagerly await the S.L. podcast every week, as I think I have already managed to binge watch the remainder over the past year! 🙂

As a registered nurse with just a fleece payment, you are well on your way to financial freedom! That’s awesome.
One of my really good friends is from Pittsburgh originally and my aunt used to live in Sewickley. I did a sleeping bag weekend for potential students at Carnegie Mellon and really wanted to go there, but the expense was simply way out of my league. I started on the Dave plan early in life and decided on a college I could afford instead. In hindsight, I’m really glad I made that decision. -

Congratulations on your progress with the Debt Snowball. Dave’s step by step methods really work and with time and effort, I’m sure you’ll soon be debt free.
Here are a couple of other sources of good information, in case you are interested.
You may want to check out http://www.mrmoneymustache.com. There is a “start here” link on the home page, which will give you an idea of what he’s all about. He’s a little crazy and over the top, but has some great ideas.
Also Clark Howard has a podcast which has a bunch of consumer information. It’s interesting stuff for those long rides in the car and I find it valuable. http://www.Clark.com
In the meantime, stick with Dave Ramsey and you’ll soon be the one calling him on the radio.

I live closer to the Heidelberg location and it’s smaller, so it seems less overwhelming. North Versailles has more to pick through, but seems more dirty. At the blue bins, it seems there are just degrees of dirty, so I feel like I stink and have fleas after I shop there. Nonetheless, if you can push past the repulsion, there are some great finds!
Thank you for the additional website links, S.C.J.! I will check those out! I would love to talk to Dave Ramsey. Though I would probably geek out and be struck nearly inarticulate, I think I could manage a debt free scream!
