I got 10 Herman Miller shell chairs for $5 each today. There are another 40 available but I have no space in the car so I’ll have to hope they’re still available Monday. The ones I got are without the folding tables, but the rest have folding tables.
My question is how to sell these things – take the legs off and sell the shell only? (Shippable). Do you think the tables are a plus or make them less desirable?
Thanks for any help – this is not my usual area.

Took 10 of them straight to a vintage consignment shop so I could load up again. So now I’ve got 17 total.
Buddy at the consignment shop is going to list them for $179 each, of which I would see 55%.
He doesn’t want the ones with tables… yet. So I still have to decide whether to sell them whole or just sell the shell. The new 7 have nice clean bright orange shells.

Looking through the solds on eBay, you could sell them either way. You could separate the shell from the base and sell each separately, or you could sell the full chair. Looks like buyers are willing to pay high prices for shipping.
Strange – but I don’t see any with the folding table, either for sale or sold. I did see someone selling just the table piece. Maybe the table is rare and none are available at the moment?
Either way, for $5 each, I don’t think you will go wrong selling them one way or another.
I don’t have an experience with shipping chairs, but, if you are going to sell the whole thing, you could possibly disconnect the two and then fit them together in a box.

That’s a great point – especially if the legs come off as two seperate pieces it might be very shippable. The table can come off but the metal arm it’s on is welded on, so that’s not going anywhere.
These are from a university, which explains the side table thing. I do feel like your typical collector prob doesn’t want the side table… BUT it’d be easy to oxy cut the thing off, or simply sell the shell.

do they have the Herman Miller mark? we found about 25 of these a couple years ago but they are Krueger fiberglass brand, couldn’t sell a single one, even though they are so cool.
i had them on local pick up though. i think if you can unscrew them from the legs, you could ship them in a big box, might be a pain, but if you have a good price plus handling, might be worth it.

I picked up a bunch of these a while back. I had NO trouble at all selling the shells for $150 on ebay without the bases. Honestly, nobody wants the stacking bases anyways. If I were you, I’d pull the tables off and sell those separately. You can also pull the glides (little plastic feet) and sell those too.
The shells actually fit perfectly in a 19″ cube box.

I think the thing that a lot of people are doing now is completely restoring the shells using this tutorial or something similar, and then purchasing brand new bases from one of the many companies that has sprung up offering great quality reproductions of some of the more sought-after original styles of bases.
The stacking bases are probably the most functional ones, but they’re just not the “cool” ones since they were originally marketed to schools, libraries, etc.

Simplicio, could you post a photo of the underside of them? If they have the narrow mount configuration instead of the wide, you might even be able to get more than $150 each for them. The newer bases are pretty much all narrow mount, so if someone buys one that’s set up for wide mount, they’ll have to go through the somewhat annoying process of replacing the shock mounts.
