I have taken the advice I’ve heard on this forum about checking a potential buyer’s “Feedback Left for Others” before accepting offers. It is good advice and I think I have saved myself some trouble by denying offers from people who leave lots of negatives. On the first 3 pages of their Feedback Left for Others, they have 5 negatives. I have a listing on a very rare item for $109 or best offer and they have sent me $50 and $75 offers I have denied. Now they are sending me this message:
“I’m confused – why do you have “make offer” if you don’t counter? What is your best price on this item, please.”
Should I tell them it’s because they have left so many negatives, or should I just ignore the message? What would you do? I’m not in a hurry to sell.

I would just go and change the listing quickly before answering. Take off make an offer. Then a short quick answer that says, sorry for the confusion, the Make an Offer was an administrative over sight which has been now corrected. Our best price is the price as listed and is showing.
Then give it a few days and go back and change the listing by adding the make an offer back in.
Now to make sure you don’t get another offer from this person, make sure you add them to your blocked buyer list.
All of this only if you are truly afraid of getting a negative feedback. Otherwise take his offer or counter offer, sell it and see what happens. If you do everything right, there should be no reason for a negative. If it was a bogus reason for a negative, if you have done everything correctly, then call and get it removed.

Sometimes I like to engage a buyer. Be interesting to see how they’d react when you say you won’t sell to the because they leave bad feedback for sellers too often. Obviously make sure you’ve blocked them.
But a healthier me will just block and ignore.

I’ve absolutely told a buyer I won’t engage with them because they leave too many negatives.
Go ahead and tell them. Some buyers need to know their actions have consequences. -

Thanks for the replies. The buyer bought at full price, so now I feel I’m in a different quandary. I don’t want to get a defect by cancelling. I’m going to have to figure something out.

I wish I had blocked him. He sent me a message complaining that if I didn’t take offers, I should take that off because it “wastes both of our time.” I offered him a cancellation but he didn’t reply.

If you really have a bad feeling. Cancel, block, move on. Make this a binary choice with no emotion.
Unless you have a history of cancellations, one temporary defect will have no effect on your seller status.

If you cancel, I would wager that he will leave you negative feedback. You’ll also have a defect. If you ship the item, perhaps with a gracious handwritten note to soothe his ego, you may or may not leave you negative feedback, and you won’t get a defect.
I’d block him either way. If he leaves negative feedback, I’d report him to eBay.

Some people just can’t be happy with paying full price, so you get to feel their burn. Agree with Liz – kill him/her with kindness, ship promptly, accept a return if required.
I would not cancel the sale b/c there is nothing preventing him to create a guest account if you block him and buying again. Sadly. -

We actually have a negative feedback from a buyer that sounds similar to yours. It says, “He says make offer, then Dont want to negotiate”.
He made an offer and we countered. He ignored our counter and bought the item at full price after the offer expired.
We’ve called multiple times trying to get it removed, but each time Ebay has said no even though they can see that we did negotiate.
It’s frustrating, but just part of doing business this day and time.

I would not stress too much about it. If the person gives you bogus negative feedback, just call Ebay. They will more than likely remove it particularly if you show that you made efforts to keep the customer happy.

He bought it at full price so just send it to him. Don’t borrow trouble by assuming he will leave negative feedback when he receives the item.
