Hey guys. As always the podcast is fantastic. It’s the mix of the business, your general lifestyle and your sharing of all aspects of it that makes it such a great listen. I started listening to the podcast a long time ago, 2015 maybe? I am another old eBay seller lol. I don’t miss the good old days of eBay however with auctions only and money orders. I made my first sale in 2002. I was already in the selling business but kept putting off eBay for the longest time. I had a booth at several flea market/antique mall places and my family owned a convenience store I sold collectibles and such out of. I created my eBay account in January of 2000. I remember I had no way back then to easily take photos of items so this was a big hangup in getting started. The camera that I took on vacations and such was one of those Canon Elph Advantix film cameras. I finally broke down went to Staples and paid almost $200 for a Fujifilm point and shoot digital camera. If I remember correctly it was 8mp. I started selling stuff right away fairly good. My first sale was a Dale Earnhardt Action die-cast Corvette. They were selling for around $70. No restrictions on new sellers back then that I can remember. I had a lot of NASCAR racing collectibles that sold like crazy on eBay back then. I always will remember putting off buying that camera and thinking its no point in putting my items on eBay because so many other people are selling the same things. I’m glad I finally took that risk, got that camera and starting selling.
I basically have been selling since then with some full-time runs, some part-time, and some hiatus. I recently started selling again about a year ago. I started listening to the podcast again around that time. The last time I was selling a lot and listening to the podcast was Summer of 2016. My life took a turn for the worse in 2016. I basically lost my original eBay account with almost 3000 feedback and all my listings. I have several other well-established accounts setup as well and I am glad I did. It’s a good idea to have a second selling account setup with some established feedback.
I am only at 170 listings now but I am working hard to build my business back up again. I work a full-time job as well. Electronics, Toys, Games, are my primary interests but I really sell almost any items from A-Z.
I have gone on way too long here! I just wanted to say again the podcast is great very inspirational.
I have emailed Jay before and I used to post some on the previous blogger site both comments and eBay videos from my YouTube channel. I have made some really bad decisions in life and financially have been at both the top and bottom. You talked about things going south in your business and your life. I can tell you all about that! Pretty much had financially what so many of us are working so hard to get to. Your episode this week motivated me to get on here and get involved! I would be glad to share more if anyone is interested in hearing it.Eddie

Glad you joined up Eddie. What part of Virginia? I think many Scavengers have had a similar up and down in their selling career.
I’d love to hear more about the bad patches you’ve gone through. I learn the most from other people’s experiences when things weren’t the best. And how you came out okay on the other side.

Hey Jay and SilverFoxFinds, thanks for the welcome!
I’m down south here in Lexington. Jay, you probably don’t remember but we emailed back and forth a few times years ago. I need to sit down sometime and write my story down. It’s a long sad tale.
I was in a situation somewhat like you guys are in now. I owned 5 properties at my best, or worst. A quick summary of what happened. I way overextended myself and tried to take on too many projects at once. I had a thriving retail business gas station convenience store on the interstate. I was a real estate salesperson and I was renovating, renting and selling property of my own and for a commission.
I was a victim of the 2007 crash I guess you could say. The bank kept saying yes so I kept buying. I had some success with renovating and selling property and figured the real estate prices would keep going up. I also had rental units for over 10 years that did really good. I was 20 when I bought my first property that had 5 units on it. I lived in one as I renovated and rented out the rest. Usually moving into the worst one myself. I started losing properties to foreclosure in 2010 I believe. 2012 I lost my retail business as well. I was stressed out and hated what I was doing by that point and did not care. I had an opportunity to sell the retail business and walk away with about $250k. I kept thinking I was going to pull out of it but I never could. I ended up getting screwed over by the fuel company who forced my business into foreclosure over $20,000 that I owed them for fuel. Just 6 months prior I agreed to a 2nd deed of trust on the property for fuel. It’s hard to even bring up and talk about really. Maybe something positive can come from sharing my entire story someday. Things got even worse as I ended up in jail for a year in 2016 lol. Yes, it’s that bad. Things are better now and improving every day focused on building an eBay business once again!-

Yikes, a year in jail ?!
It’s a good story for us to make sure we never overextend ourselves. Though we could never buy property with no debt, we try to keep it very very manageable. Glad you made it out the the side.

Best of luck building your ebay business back up! It CAN be done, and sounds like you have the determination and savvy to make it happen. As Jay said,I think we’ve all made mistakes and can point to efforts that failed, but as long as we learn and keep getting back up and going on, we’ll do fine. And these forums are a great place to get advice!
