Alrighty, I found this amazing hat recently and decided to pay up for it and now after research I’m ready to list it. It is an authentic 1960s Playboy Club Doorman’s hat. The inside is lined with vintage newspaper for protection and it’s dated 1966. It has vintage playing cards behind the band on one side and two pinback buttons stuck to the band on the other side. I have it all drafted up, but before I hit submit I’d like to get your thoughts on how you would go about doing so.
I have been in touch with two different former Playboy Bunnies and they both also worked in clubs from the era, and they both confirmed that the hat is authentic and that they remember employees wearing the same hat back in the day. I have also found photos from Playboy alumni reunions where a former doorman attended a few times and he was wearing the same, or similar, hat in the pictures. I have also been in touch with multiple major auction houses, one of which just recently handled the official Playboy auction where they sold parts of the Hugh Hefner estate, and they have all expressed interest in bringing this hat to auction for me stating a low end conservative estimate of $1,000 and stating they believed it would go much higher than that.
However, I’d like to list it on eBay first. If for any other reason than to possibly use it to draw attention to my eBay store overall. This is without a doubt the most high profile item I’ve ever picked up, as well as the one with the potential to sell for more than I’ve ever had before. I would just like more opinions before I pull the trigger. Here are a few of the images. Thanks guys!

Congrats on the great find.
So what’s the question: should you list it on eBay?
Answer: why not?You can list it one of two ways:
–BIN with “Make Offer”. List it crazy high (like $5k). Then see what offers come in. Choose the one you like.
–Or list on auction. If you think $1000 is a goo starting point, then begin it there and see what happens.I know $1000 is a lot of money, but it’s really like any item. How much did you buy it for?

Thanks for the reply!
My question, I’m not entirely sure to be honest. I guess I’m just wanting to make sure I include the right information. My listings are usually more straight and to the point. I used to get really wordy on stuff but I cut that out a few years ago when my wife pointed it out to me. With this one, I feel like I kinda do need to include more information like the folks I’ve spoken to about it and that sort of thing.
My initial thought was to list it for $5999.95 and then put it on sale almost immediately to use that as a pull. I have no clue if that actually works though. I want to sell it, but I also don’t want it to sell too quick because I do think it could bring more eyes to my store. I’ve been on eBay since 1998, but have never had an item quite like this.
My “specialty” is vintage hats as well, so it kinda goes along with my overall theme. I have around 1,500 items listed and I’d say around 1,000 of those items listed are hats. Most are old trucker hats and the sort though, not really the “fancy” hat style, although I do have a small amount of those listed as well.
I paid $75 for this one, WAY more than I ever pay for single items and absolutely more than I ever pay for any sort of that. I try to keep my price per hat way low, $1 or less. It kills me to pay more than $1 for any hat so this was a big leap for me. I just had a hunch on this one though.

We’ve only sold a handful of items over $1000, so I’d love to hear if there are more experienced Scavengers of high end items here.
If you’ve been selling this long, then trust your gut. People who pay that much will want to know the provenance and any materials that support it.
Why not list it for $6k with “Make offers”. You’ll quickly see what the market is willing to pay. It’s basically a “reverse auction” where you start at the high end and see what people will pay. Someone could buy it outright.

Lord knows that’s the truth! If you saw my store you’ll see I’m not afraid to price sky high with BO on everything. I have a full time job so right now I’m kinda forced to try to sell as few items as I can for as much as I can. I just don’t have the time to sell a bunch of items for just $10-$20, in terms of being able to ship them out and everything. I hope that changes in the future though. I know I’d technically do better to price things more reasonable. My method has worked alright for the last few years at least though.
Over the years my highest sold items are a vintage 1800s Aboriginal boomerang/throwing stick for around $900 and a vintage 1950s professional wrestling poster featuring the card for the show with an image of Gorgeous George for around $750. Most everything else has been $500 and down.

Will do! Yep, I’d much rather be finding and trying to sell these types of things instead of doing some sort of dropshipping deal on doo-dads and whatevers. It’s so much more exciting.

Trust me. We all would love to find these special items. But as fas as Ive experienced, we couldnt build a business just selling homeruns….unless we spent all day every day at auctions buying the really special items.

Wow that’s an amazingly cool hat, even without the Playboy connection.
I also like the 50 cent sticker inside.

I just recently listened to the podcast, thanks for the mention! I did list it, it’s up and running now. I went with $5,999.95 OBO in the end and I have 21 watchers so far. No offers yet, but I didn’t expect any action at all for a few weeks at least. Here is a link to it if any of you would like to just check it out…
https://www.ebay.com/itm/333062513215
I’ll let ya’ll know when I get any sort of action on it.
